Can your windows break out if the wind is too heavy?

My windows sound as if they are going to blow out because of how strong the wind is. Can they break out from heavy winds?

2. If your windows are old

and the frame is separating from the house they could if the wind is at least over 50mph. Be careful.

but it would probably have to be hurricane force winds. Unfortunately, we in Florida know all about that sort of thing. I lost parts of my roof but my windows held. You're probably okay, but make sure they are tightly sealed and locked.

I live in a mobile home and I am terrified whenever we have any heavy storms. One of my kitchen windows has a crack in it and I expect it to go soon if I don't get it fixed.

7. Usually, Its not the wind that breaks the glass,

but all of the debris from the neighbors; trash cans, lawn chairs, kids toys, small planters.

One pre-Hurricane task--pick up everything in the yard and/or porch, stow safely. There were lots of broken windows in Downtown Houston after our last big storm--construction debris broke a few windows & pieces of those windows broke more windows. Yet another reason to stay inside during a storm.

However, if a pane is slightly loose in the frame, it's extra vulnerable.

11. I remember Hurricane Alicia 1983

I worked in the Milam building in Houston at the time. There was so much glass on the streets from the shattered windows it looked like snow drifts.

10. depends how they've been fitted.

If they are older types they might have been fitted from the inside of the room. If so they'll possibly be wedged into place at the head rail and cill (top and bottom bits of timber respectively) There will be timber wedges jammed between the window case and the masonry, or the timber, if you live in a timber house. It's unusual to see older windows nailed/screwed into place. Some older windows were fitted from the outside but I don't know the detail - we fit from the inside in Scotland.

As the windows age the timbers can shrink slightly and that loosens the wedges. I've seen many windows that have been blown into the room.

it would be prudent to get a competent tradesperson to look at them immediately. There might be a public liability issue if you don't and the windows fall out.
