Man Forced To Pay $20,000 Support For Non-Existent Child
Judge Rules Child Never Existed

POSTED: 10:28 am EST December 14, 2004

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Steve Barreras' attorney said he had never seen anything like it.

After Barreras was hauled into court, peppered with threats and demands for money for a child he adamantly denied fathering five years ago and even paid out $20,000 to support, his ex-wife was under a judge's order to produce the child.

So last week, Viola Trevino picked up a 2-year-old girl and her grandmother off the street, promised them a trip to see Santa Claus and $50 and took the girl to court, alleging it was her daughter.

"I have seen hundreds of jury trials and I have never seen anything like this," said Rob Perry, Barreras' attorney.

It was the latest chapter in a bizarre case that has prompted Gov. Bill Richardson's office to call for a full investigation.

2. It's morans like that who give women a bad name
Edited on Tue Dec-14-04 12:20 PM by skygazer
For every idiot like this one, there are ten women who are struggling to raise a kid and receiving no child support or getting a major runaround about it. Not that the child support system is anywhere near perfect - I pay support to my ex husband and I'm getting the shaft pretty much.

Bottom line, it's a rotten system that needs to be fixed - shit like this makes that abundantly clear.

7. Yeah, I would have offered grandma $200 bucks ...
$100 up front and $100 at the completion of the mission.

But not like I'd ever consider such a despicable act. <tease!>

5. So in the meantime this poor guy is out $20,000
his reputation is not good, he most likely had to take time off from his job to defend himself against this insane woman, and the Governors office is going to investigate? Where is the justice for Mr. Barreras? He should get his money back as well as a public apology from this woman. And she should be charged with perjury as well as kidnapping. She should also be made to pay his attorney fees as well. The woman is obviously off her rocker but yet I still have no sympathy for her.

8. Hello? Yes it's wrong to bilk the guy, but seriously
What is wrong with a little self-motivation? If I were a man, before I'd shell out $1 to an ex- based on claimed paternity, I'd pay for the test out of my own money. I wonder if we are getting the whole story here?

Forgive me but it's a sad fact that some of these folks were born to be used. Most of us would not, but there's always the PT Barnum marks (you know - one born every minute) among us. Let's educate our men folk to not be so damn gullible. :-)

13. Kidnapping?
I don't think that would go. She didn't kidnap the little girl she used in court.

She should, however, face charges for fraud. She should also have to make restitution to both Mr. Barreras and the court.

6. My stepdad has a nephew who was living with a less than
reputable woman (I'm trying to be nice here!)...She already had three kids, and then after they split up, claimed to be pregnant by him. He pays child support, but she never lets him see the kid, and there's never been a paternity test because he just knows she wouldn't lie to him. Yeah, OK!

10. Here's something else that makes no sense
Edited on Tue Dec-14-04 12:49 PM by skygazer
Wouldn't the court have required some kind of identification of the (nonexistent) child before assessing child support? Birth certificate? SS number? I know all those things were in the paperwork when I went in for child support hearings.

And she really is a moran because if the original assessment was five years previously and she brought in a 2 year old kid, that's pretty damn obvious. :wtf:

There's something rotten in Denmark here.

edited to add - okay, just read the entire article and supposedly all this stuff was faked - the paternity test, the SS #, the birth cert. Still sounds fishy to me - that's a hell of a lot to go through to get child support. Which over five years was only $4000 a year - not peanuts but I wouldn't think it would be worth all that nonsense. I still think there's more to this than meets the eye.

15. I protests to that statement!
.. there's absolutely nothing rotten in Denmark.

Apart from the Danish Social-Democratic party - which just seems more & more pathetic in their attempts to win back the government.

11. And she tried to pass a 2-year-old off as a 5-year-old?
I hope they throw the book at her for this fraud.
