Poll question: Should Small World be removed from Disneyland?
Look. It's about time. That damn thing has been offending everyone since 1964. You can't walk passed it without hearing that damn song...and then you're stuck with it the rest of the day! How could kids raised on Power Rangers, Halo, Unreal Tournament, and X-Men possibly like this crap? Even Barney the Dinosaur has more edge than this!

It's not Space Mountain that's making you sick...It's that Damn Small World song...and probably a little too much cotton candy.

1. They should let Noam Chomsky redesign it
Then it would be a more accurate portrayal of why it really is a small world afterall

2. Small World should be converted to a pistol range
Every time I hear that music I feel like grabbing my .45 and letting a few rounds fly.

3. I want it gone but . . .
Edited on Wed Sep-24-03 09:45 AM by SiouxJ
I think the reason they keep it is for the senior citizens. They won't have anything left to go on if they eliminate it. It's something they can go on with the grandkids. That's the only reason my Marketing brain can come up with for why it's still there.

For the record, I hated the damn thing even back when I was a little kid and I went on it with MY grandparents!

We'll have to start recruiting members and hold an election for President etc. ;-). I get credit as being the founder but I don't think that should automatically make me president :-)

Edited on Wed Sep-24-03 09:47 AM by LynneSin
But give it a few more years and they'll make a damn movie out of it like they did with 'The Pirates of the Caribean' and now another ride from Disney is getting a movie treatment (I forget which one)

And on an edit note: How many times have you been to Disney that this has become an issue for you?

...Starring Eddie Murphy. Don't know about that one. Last year's "Country Bears" was a big bomb!

And on EDIT: and answer: About once every 2-3 years. I love the place...except for the evil north eastern corner of the park!

5. My Older Sister's Best Friend.......
....went to Disney World for her honeymoon, shortly after it opened in 1970. They were on the "It's a Small World" ride when it got stuck. They were trapped for almost an hour until they could get the boats moving again, all the while listening to that damn song.

I thought it stunk when I saw it at the 1964 World's Fair in New York. It stinks today..............

9. I hate it
I visited Disneyland my first and only time as a 6th grader. My little sisters wanted to go on that ride because they knew the song. So my parents took us.

We boarded the boat and while we were waiting for the boat to depart I leaned over the side to look at the water. WHAM! The boat launched down the conveyer and bashed my head into a bar that supports handrails on the boarding area.

I suspect an operator waited for me to lean over and when I did he launched the boat on purpose. I had a headache for an hour and I hate that song more than you can imagine.

It happened in 1970 but I still have flashbacks. Too late for me to sue?

11. At one time I had the original "Small World" 45
"The song that's the smash hit of the New York World's Fair!" said the cover.
Music by Robert Sherman.

On the B side, the song was sung in several different languages. I never could figure out what they were singing. I didn't even know there WAS such a thing as a foreign language at the time.

At any rate, the song really drives me batty now! How can those Disney employees stand it???

18. I had one too!
Ha ha!
And here I thought I was the only one!

I think it should be kept. I think it's a great work of high camp.
I mean, come on, adult men built that ride, do you REALLY think ANYONE over the age of 5 has ever taken it seriously?

Besides, the song doesn't bother me any, I just start humming to myself, "Duff beer for me, Duff beer for you, I'll have a Duff beer, you'll have one too!"

19. Hey.....you're bashing one of my Disney memories
First time I went to Disney, we were visiting friends in California. And without my children (ages 2 and 4) for the first time. I went on the ride and cried the whole way through it because it so reminded me of my kids (and my guilt). But I still love the ride AND the song. So there. :P

33. OK, I'll make you a deal.
How about we nuke the one in California, so that something worthwhile can be built (like a Harry Potter quiddich coaster or something, or an Aladdin flying carpet ride), and we leave the one in Florida unmolested, which is sooo deserves. Since I live closer to California, that would at least drown out that song coming from the west, since the Appalaichans would block any of that from Fla, I can sleep again.

Deal?

25. I've never been to disneyworld/land, but the small world thing always
reminds me of that "Simpsons" episode where Marge's sister takes the kids to "Duff Gardens". They have a ride with the dolls singing "a duff beer for me, a duff beer for you". Lisa drinks the water and starts tripping on the ride.

26. They should change it to reflect the modern world.
The American kids should all be fat and addicted to video games. The Hindi kids should be singers and dancers in a Bollywood movie. The Thai kids should be sold into sexual slavery. The Japanese kids should be neglected by their salaryman fathers. The Iraqi kids should be portrayed with their arms and legs blown off, and the African kids would all be dying of AIDS and malnutrition.

Hope that's not too bitter.

Change the song to the Badger, Mushroom, Snake song. If it has to be annoying songs that stick in your head it might as well be the flavor of the week.
