BRIDGETON -- Broad Street School was evacuated Thursday morning for the third time in just eight days when a kindergarten teacher discovered a fuseless stick of dynamite in her classroom, city police said.
Police determined the Salem County Sheriff's Department K-9 Unit accidentally left the dynamite in the school last Friday following a training exercise, according to Lt. Burl Kimble.
Typically, K-9 handlers will hide fuseless sticks of dynamite or other devices inside already-cleared buildings as a reinforcement training aid for bomb-sniffing dogs, according to officials.
"Whenever they search a building like that, they have to put something out there for the dog to find," explained Cumberland County Sheriff Michael Barruzza.
Police do not believe the stick of dynamite posed a threat to students or staff at the kindergarten-through-eighth-grade school.
"There was no fuse and no detonation device," said Sgt. Michael Pastirko.
The fuseless stick of dynamite was discovered in an empty storage container inside room B-1 of the school around 8:30 a.m. by kindergarten teacher Joan Soone, according to Ptl. Harold Watkins' investigation report.
