4. same thing with signature lines

I don't know the technology, but I'd guess the avatar and sig lines are stored in a database or some sort, and the subject/message data is stored in a different database, so when you actually click on something it links data from both bases to show you the entire message as you see it.

By doing that, it saves a ton of space, because they only have to store 1 of each avatar, rather than 1 for each of my posts, plus 1 for each of everybody else who has the same avatar as me, for each of their posts, etc.

btw - that makes pretty much all the posts that are related to tetsing profile changes unnecessary - make a change and go find something you had previously posted to see how the change worked.

Everything needs to be idiot friendly for me. My son handles anything more complicated than - click here. For my next trick I'll try to figure out how to put in a sig line. On my email my son put in "Mommie Dearest". Gotta love that little bugger.

if you make a profile change, it isn't necessary to post something to see what the change looks like (people do that from time to time) - just go look at an old post and you will be able to see what the change looks like.

sig lines are as easy as avatars. It's in the profile, too. There is a field titled something like signature - just type in whatever you want for your sig line. you can use html tags in there too.

for instance, my sig has <br> which causes a line break, so it shows as 4 (?) lines of text or 5, however many I have there

the smilies that are made up of type symbols, like the basic "smilie face," look like short-cut symbols when you type them but the actual smilie appears when you post your message --

does that answer your question, or did you mean something else?
