If you witnessed cheating on finals would you ignore it?

I arrived 5 minutes late for my final in my Western Civilization class last Wednesday night so I sat in the back of the class. We were told to only bring a pen or a pencil because it would be a closed book test. I can't believe what I witnessed in my class :wow: half of the students pulled out notes and opened their book up and looked for the answers.

The test consisted of 125 questions that were essay type of questions and to be honest I probably failed the test because it was so long and in depth and also the test is being graded on a curve. You needed to know all of the dates, places, connections on who served under, after and before all of the rulers, kings, etc. You also had to know the Bible inside and out which I don't know because my family were from various different religious backgrounds and they didn't attend church services that often. I attended a Roman Catholic church because the church was by my house.

I have never seen so many people cheat on a test in my life before and it was blatant out in the open cheating and the Professor sat at his desk and I know he could see them cheating but he didn't say anything.

Is cheating common in Art Colleges or Colleges in general? The last College that I attended for my Associates Degree was a very small private College that tossed your butt out if they caught you cheating. I don't cheat and I believe that the only person that got cheated last week was the ones doing the cheating.

One of the guys offered me his notes on the way out and he didn't whisper he asked me out loud and the Professor heard him.

The test is being graded on a curve

I am not going to say anything but it pisses me off that he is grading on a curve. Hopefully they were smart enough and answered a few of the questions wrong or left them unanswered.

7. Cheating on curved tests is horrible

If you're hurting OTHER STUDENTS in your class, that's just mean. If I saw anyone cheating in a curved class, I would anonymously tell the teacher that there was cheating (wouldn't name names)

I doubt I would tell because if this was me, I would probably assume I wasn't paying attention when the professor said we could have notes during the test.

11. It would be a good idea to check with the teacher

to make sure that what you thought was going to be policy actually was.

You could say that you understood him to say that it was a closed book/notebook test. If he says it was, you could admit your perplexity at why half the students openly used resources and he did nothing about it. If he says that he changed his policy and announced that, you might ask for a chance to retake the exam.

9. Does your school have an honor code?

If so, then you are duty bound to report the cheating that occurred. If your teacher doesn't care, I would suggest going to the Dean.

It has to do with the integrity of the work you do and the degree you earn at that institution.

10. Eh, cheating is a reality at EVERY level of education.

I did it a lot in high school, but only on POINTLESS quizzes about stuff I knew I'd never need to know. Or, I'd copy my friends' worksheets, which were mostly just busywork "fill in the blank" type nonsense that was just a total waste of time. And they copied mine too, heh. Come to think of it, we did a lot of cheating in high school! And we were the #1 high school in the state, or one of the top 3. Oh well. :)

Does it matter if teachers "pass" kids just because they don't want to fail them? That was the case for me when it came to math a few times, the teacher didn't want to fail anyone so she just sort of, hmm, "entered a non-failing grade" for me when really I should have had like an F tripple minus. heh :P

But now that I'm in college, I don't see any cheating at all, although I'm sure it goes on. What I do see a lot of is people coming into class like 30 minutes or an hour late, and acting like "What? What's the problem?" or just coming to class once every few weeks and being surprised when they're failing. :shrug:

13. Do they answer their cell phones during class?

I can't understand why they let their phones ring during a class and I find it so rude that well i am lost for words when it comes to that subject.

Western Civilization you can get by in life without knowing most of the things that you learn in that class. I see your point thanks.

absolutely no talking or answering cell phones in class. If it rings, it's like someone just set off an atomic bomb, and the professor gets pretty pissed.

14. Another student cheating is none of your business.

It is the business of the professor and the student(s) cheating.

As I see it, either the professor knew it and doesn't care; he knows it, cares, but doesn't want to ruin the average grade of his students, as it would reflect poorly on him; or he doesn't know because he's an idiot and therefore most people would probably fail because he's a piss-poor teacher anyway.

When I'm writing a paper, I generally do my damnedest to "keep my eyes on my own paper", as it were, and do the best I can. I've never been so in over my head as to just think, "screw it" and pay attention to what another person is doing.

Trust me: they cheaters will find themselves with their pants down (perhaps literally) when they get out into the real world.

15. The Professor was the one that left during my freeper fight about God

We had a huge argument about * and God. One of the freepers said that he was elected by God and all hell broke loose when I went nuts on them. They sat in the back of the class and apparently cheating is a norm in their world because their leader has cheated his way through life and they don't mind.

The Professor isn't stupid or anything like that. I believe he is afraid of them and what they can do to him if all of their parents complained on him.
