Personally, I always thought Raoul was a shallow goober who only liked Christine after she became famous. Key to this is his line "Can it be...can it be Christine...what a change, you're really not a big...the gawkish girl that once you were."

He only likes her because she makes him look good. The Phantom is almost the hero of the play and a "good" guy. Raoul needs to learn some humility.
