Notre Dame in the ACC?
http://espn.go.com/ncaa/news/2003/0925/1623070.html

Looking for more green, both literal and figurative, the Atlantic Coast Conference presidents have begun discussions with Notre Dame about becoming the conference's 12th member, according to newspaper reports Thursday.

Citing sources inside and outside the league, the Charlotte Observer reported that the ACC has made concessions to ease Notre Dame's concern about relinquishing its lucrative independent status in football in the near future.

Both the Observer and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that the ACC has discussed scenarios involving Notre Dame, some of which included the Irish becoming an ACC member for all sports except football and the Irish playing a limited ACC football schedule.

Notre Dame is independent for football but is a member of the Big East for most of its other sports. The university also has had membership talks with the 11-member Big Ten.

1. Notre Dame won't go for it...
The ACC won't change its "all-sports" membership tradition just for them, and ND will remain an independent--or join the Big Ten or Big East in football, too--before it seriously entertains any overture from the ACC. That's primarily a Florida State thing driving it, and most of the other schools have said "no way" to the Irish's joining in football only.

Plus, the travel budgets of the other schools would be busted, not a good thought in the time of universities having their operating budgets whacked, and even their athletic budgets shrunken significantly. In addition, too many alumni bases of the schools would be against it--they just plain DON'T like Notre Dame, period--some of that unfortunately being religious prejudice.

The idea of ND being in the ACC sickens me. Not for religious reasons in this case, of course, but because of their extreme athletic snobbery. I think I'd just as soon spray the first ND fans I saw walking through the gates at Kenan Stadium with mace! :puke:

B-)

4. I'm against ALL the expansion
The ACC Basketball tournament is like lent to me and I don't like all this Miami vs. Wake business and the like.

2. No effing way!
Atlantic Coast Conference except when we can get some of that Notre Dame money...er magic, yea we mean magic. Has nothing to do with money. Any critics that think this alignment is money motivated is anti-American. Notice how college football has followed the path of the mega-mergers in corporate America?

3. Notre Dame should join the Big East.
The Irish are in the Big East in all other sports, why not football? Besides, that conference is freaking out over losing Miami -- it's best team and number one cash cow -- having Notre Dame would make up ten thousandfold what they stand to lose when Miami's gone.

6. No, please no
ND should stay the *bleep* out. The ACC is more a of a South East Atlantic Conference. Last time I looked, ND was in the midwest.

I do not want that school anyhwere near the ACC
