ok ...I have been a pc guys for years and years but I just got a mac! me and my wife decided to skip buying each other gifts and pool our cash to get a gift together that we both wanted!

I am now the proud owner of an ibook! Damn this thing rocks ...now I gotta start gettin some software for this puppy!

Never thought I would say it, but this MAC rocks balls all over my PC!

It isn't just that it is a minority target, it is that a Mac virus would be far more difficult to accomplish than a windows virus.

Considering that you can reformat the boot volume on a PC and you can't on a Mac...

Maybe Windows NT/XP/2000 fixed this, but EVERY DOS-based Windows version can wipe the boot volume nice and shiney clean.

on my Mac maybe once every four weeks. It's an external drive that I use for video editing, and it also carries a clone of my system. It's fully bootable, and like I said it gets reformatted down to the ground every few weeks...

The boot volume you can't wipe on a Mac is the one the system came up on. Once the machine is up, you can erase any other drive, bootable or not. Just not the system's boot volume.

My favorite form of media protection is on the old 300MB CDC pack drives. There's a button on the front panel; if you don't push it, you can't erase the mounted disk pack.

I'm a pc guy...hated macs. I still think they are somewhat elitist but we priced laptop pc's vs mac laptops and to get a pc with all the goodies on there --dvd burner, cd burner, wireless blah blah blah, the prices were the same.

my wife talked me into the mac and I must admit that it is pretty sweet. You dont even have to install stuff. You just drag it on and it works.

17. Okay, I'll admit what you described sounds cool...

But did you compare components for the price? Every single time I look, a $600 PC is comparable to a $1800 Mac. Hell, even the $3000 Mac has chincey amounts of RAM, Video, and disk space. A $3000 Mac should hve 1GB of RAM, a Radeon 9800 XT, and 300GB hard disk space. Last I recall it had 512MB, a Radeon 9600, and 120GB. I'm not sure on the hard drive, but the lower-end Radeon and petty RAM amount? Please. I can build my own PC with a Gig of RAM, dual Athlon processor, and 250GB hard drive for $1500. We all can't afford big Macs.

Besides, I'm a geek. Not a mainstream American. I like products that require flexibility and the ability to be tweaked. (though I hate it when they crash which was why I moved to Linux. But, in all honesty, XP is much more stable, assuming they practice "common sense computing". And many don't because they don't want to think and have somebody else do it all for them. That's typical of any industry and I'm not immune either.)

Some people hate wanting the ability to tweak. More power to them. Just let Apple do what they think is best for them. But I won't stray into the realm of political parallels...

Off topic, but I won't reply directly to the original thread... given that the person who posted this message may have been a troll looking for a fight, I'm amazed by the majority of the people with their spit on me for responding. I wonder how they'd feel if I pulled a big-ass "PC ATTACK" thread.

I learned on macs but switched to pc when I started doing animation as Macs can't really do the 3d thing.

the mac is really for my wife as she has an ebay store and we were always competing for computer time.

I will still use my pc though for animation and for creating dvd's of my cartoons.

I totally hear you with mac making everything too simple.

my pc is a hot rod. Bits and pieces from all over the place. It sounds like you know more about hardware than I do but my x-wife is an IT person and she got it all hooked up for me and my PC rocks.

I am just saying that I was very very skeptical about the mac and thus far I have to reluctantly admit that I am very impressed so far!

(S)he's blinded by bias. This self-described geek won't take the time to look up the benefits of a Mac because (s)he has spent years listening to others, who are just as uninformed, bitch about them.

I have a B.S. in computer science, and am half way through my master's degree in the same. I have three Linux boxes, but my wife and I share a PowerBook. I love it.

Mac OS X is based on BSD, which makes it more stable and secure than Windows, and Macs can be tweaked just as much as Windows boxes can, if you care to look under the hood. The beauty is that you don't have to if you don't want to.

Sure, Macs are more expensive, but they work, and they come with a lot more software than Windows. Does Windows come with a decent FTP client? Nope. Does Windows come with a C/C++ compiler and development environment? Don't bet a Coke on that one. Does Windows have a pure 3D environment? Hell no.

I think, hands down, that you made the right choice.

Thats the only problem I am having so far is knowing where everything is! I am so use to how PC works. Is it in the applications folder or something? Or is there some sort of free ware thing I down load from apple?

OS X does come with a great (for me) ftp client, but it's not what most expect.

I spend a lot of time in the command line, and the ftp command there brings up a text-based ftp client that far surpasses the test-based ftp client that comes with Windows.

It has all of the features a bash-lover could want, including tab for filename completion, both local and remote.

Here, however, is a big list of Mac ftp clients, some free. I haven't used any, so I can give no recommendations. Sorry!

20. Well my cubemate decided not to buy a Mac because they

were too expensive, so he bought a $2300 Dell instead of a $1300 iMac.

His Dell is dead right now, a virus or trojan of some sort keeps it from completing the boot process. It's been pretty much unusable for a couple of weeks, and he has no idea how to clean it. Neither do I.

6. One great thing is if you install all applications under the

Apps folder under your user id, you can drag the user id to a second computer and bing bang your apps are installed (except Norton System Works and maybe a couple other funny apps)

That is the thing that made me decide to love the Mac after I got pissed off at some of the Apple's "free software"....

Also all your email and contacts are under your user id, and again drag to new puter and you have not lost any email.

I miss my Mac and now my new mission in life is to get into a G5. I'll save my HP notebook for surfing the web- the G5 will be for graphics, animation, video & photography (my loves in life).

Bought my 12" iBook a couple of years ago. No problems at all. OSX doesn't even require defragging. Just keep it cool and it should last a long time.

Couldn't live without it. Music, DVD's, communication. It's a complete entertainment center.

That's because Mac OS X is a BSD (Unix). Unix OS's use inodes in their file system, which point to chunks of data, which can be placed randomly (physically) about the drive.

Windows uses NTFS, which is based on FAT, which works best with sequential access. That means that Windows likes it best when chunks of files are right next to each other physically.

It's just a difference of file systems. I may be biased, but I much prefer Unix filesystems.
