What is " Mozilla Firefox ? "

I got pitched to change to this browser, but I don't know if all these good things are really good or if it's just a come on.

It seems they cure all the problems I hate about IE.

Anybody got info on this....

Actually, for my job, I run three browsers at once, Mozilla, Opera and IE. You don't have to delete IE to run Mozilla, but Mozilla will become your preferred browser.

You will still need it on occasion anyway to get to Windows Update, but otherwise they co-exist quite well.

I am a computer illiterate so i don't take advantage of the special things it has to offer..I just use it instead of IE because I don't get popups ever anymore. I used to get popups using IE EVEN WITH popup blockers..

you'll love it. tabs are awesome, and it blocks every popup except the ones YOU allow. you can find all kinds of extensions and plugins for just about anything. and there are cool themes, and it has built-in search engines

It does take a little effort to tweak it to how you like. It is not difficult or time consuming really, but to get to where you really love it and see why others do too you'll want to download some extensions. Afterward you will love it. I have mine set up with the weather showing in the bottom corner of my browser, it alerts me when I get a new email to my gmail account, built in google search, tabbed browsing and opening links in new tabs so you don't lose your place, blow pics on web pages up with just a click of the mouse. Just try it. It is free so nothing to lose.

Email will be uneffected because if it's web based it doesn't matter what browser you use and if it isn't web based, your browser has nothing to do with it anyway.

I've been using it for two years now. Only time I use IE is when I make a website and have to test compatibility. And if everyone was to switch over to firefox, it'd make my life as a webdesigner easier because of the support for PNG alph transparency.

I have kitty files and kitty pictures on my directional tabs, etc . all kinds of themes. SIGH! its so much better. :)

ONly drawback: You can't right click shortcuts on the desktop. Or at least, I haven't been able to figure out how to do it. Suggestions?

that you don't get the popup menu option for "create a new short-cut" when you right-click your desk-top

or that you don't get a popup menu option for "make this a short-cut" when you right-click on a site url in the browser?

You want to be able to open Internet shortcuts from your desktop - is that right?

Creating a shortcut on the desktop:
Right-click the desktop and select "New" ... Select "Shortcut". You'll be asked for the location of the item - type the web site's URL. Click "Next" ... name your shortcut ... and you're done!

Adding a shortcut from the browser to the desktop ...
Drag the icon in the address bar to the desktop and you'll have a shortcut to that site.

Example:
If you want to bookmark this page...
Do you see the little "DU" logo in the address bar? (It's immediately to the left of "http"). Left-click on it and drag it to the desktop. You now have a shortcut to this page.


You can open your shortcut by double-clicking on it or by right-clicking on it and selecting "Open".

ON EDIT: If you were talking about right-clicking a link and creating a shortcut on the desktop for that link ...

You can do that with Firefox, but you need an extension:

When you install it, make sure Firefox is set to allow software installation (Tools ... Options ... Web Features ... Allow web sites to install software). This feature must be enabled any time you want to install extensions or themes directly from the web. (For security reasons, I usually keep it disabled and enable it only when I want to install something.)

25. Download the extension Toolbar Enhancements

That will give you all of the toolbar options you are used to in IE and many more. In Firefox, click on tools > extensions > get more extensions. Or type in "Toolbar Extension" in google for other Firefox extension sites. I also recommend the Tabbrowser extension.

Then choose the File menu, and "Import." Choose Internet Explorer to import the bookmarks you had before in IE, and follow the directions on the installation.

A couple of notes on terminology, for the unfamiliar:

-- An "Extension" is an add-on that adds new features to Firefox. Really, really cool idea, and there are some great ones already out there!

-- A "Theme" is a way to add a new "look and feel" to the browser. It's just like adding a "skin" to Winamp. There's a whole list of them that users have contributed (some better than others, but what the hey :) ).
