Driver going 70 mph gets turkey embedded in windshield

BECKLEY, W.Va. - Jared Williams ruffled a few feathers while driving on Interstate 64.

A wild turkey flew into the truck's windshield on Tuesday. Williams was traveling about 70 mph at the time, but managed to pull safely to the side of the road.

"It looked like someone stuffed the turkey in the windshield," said Dave Creager of Creager Automotive Repair Service. "It didn't look real."

Williams, 22, had been driving a company truck for Appalachian Laboratories during the collision, and endured turkey jokes from his co-workers the rest of the day.

Wild turkeys, I believe, can actually fly quite well. Better than pheasants, I think.

9. Wild Turkeys are very strange...

Once on a trip to the Highland Lakes Area, before we moved here, my daughter and I were driving on a country road. We saw some big dark bird on the side of the road and I slowed down not to hit it as it ran into the road. It fell in behind the car and started chasing us. I slowed down more and it fell in beside us. We saw that it was a turkey and my daughter, being from the Houston Metro area and never having seen one except on a platter, wanted to take a picture of it. She opened the car door and the stupid thing jumped in the car!

We spent a good 5 minutes fighting this stinky bird trying to get it out of the car. It had climbed in the back seat and had no plans of leaving. We would have looked like crazy people squealing and prodding this bird with an umbrella if someone had driven by. :)

Wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) live in woods in parts of North America and are the largest game birds found in this part of the world. I saw one on the lawn of a nearby house before thanksgiving '03 - it had escaped from a shipment. When the car in front of me stopped and they were excitedly pointing at the turkey and exclaiming, I saw it take off and land on the roof.

RONKONKOMA, N.Y. A New York state woman is in critical condition after a 20-pound frozen turkey smashed through the windshield of her moving car.

Suffolk County police say the incident happened early Saturday morning when the turkey was tossed out the window of an oncoming car in Ronkonkoma (rahn-KAHN'-kuh-mah), on Long Island.

It knocked out the driver. Police say a passenger took hold of the steering wheel and guided the car to the side of the road.

The 44-year-old driver from Long Island is in critical condition in a local hospital.
