Okay people - Define Irony

I just had to change a story because Irony was improperly used. I'd like to think the press would at least know what true irony is.

So, maybe I'm wrong...maybe through social evolution the definition of irony has changed...okay people what's it mean?

in Ireland's copying the governing system and processes of the country she most chafes against and despises.

Let's say you've an innocent man on death row. He rallies his lawyers, his family, friends and supporters, a group from the local Catholic church and for years, legal wrangling and praying and protest on his behalf occurs. Finally, after much ado, he's granted a stay of execution and a full pardon looks probable. On the very eve of that good news he dies. That's a coincidence. If on the very eve of that good news he's shot, or suicides, it's ironic.
