Goddamnit, the bushies are NOT going to ruin my Christmas, even though they came damned close to doing so.
My post-election funk has lifted ever so slightly the last couple of days, and I'm feeling what might be actual happiness for the first time in a long time. A long, long, LONG time. It was unexpected and very, very welcome.
I've had a gleefully great time finding a couple of truly amazing gifts for my husband and family--nothing too expensive, and all by local merchants or artists. The look on my husband's face when he saw his new tribal drum--yeah, I gave it to him a little early--was a gift in itself. Second great thing about the gift: one of our cats is, amazingly, enraptured with the drum sound and runs to sit at my husband's feet and watch him adoringly whenever he picks up the drum. Strange kitties.
My 65-year-old republican father, whom I completely adore despite his politics, cracked me up (and surprised the heck out of me) when he called me at work yesterday with the greeting "Dude, you're gettin' a Dell!" (there's something incredibly endearing about hearing a senior citizen so delighted with himself for his attempt at hipness). My current computer has had chronic and mysterious hardware problems, so he's getting me a new one "that'll do until you get your puter-on-steroids up and running again." Aw, dad.
So, it's simple, trite, predictable stuff that's lifting my spirits--the pleasure of giving to those I love, the surprise at the generosity of my dad, and a dozen other little things like baking Christmas cookies and watching A Charlie Brown Christmas. It's schlocky, and I love it.
It's been a hard, depressing winter so far, and I'll take this lift in my spirits however it comes. So, happy holidays to you all, and I hope you can find a little happiness, too.
Okay, now somebody get me the lyrics to the Whos' Christmas song! :7
