I am sick and tired of being told how sardines are gross and all. I am tired of pretending that I'm the only one because some people don't want to be embarrassed.

I know, for a fact that I am not the only one out there who eats sardines with great enthusiasm but cannot share the joy of such a moment for fear of bigoted anti-sardiners reactions.

I know I'm not the only one who enjoys a good run on sentence either.

I ask now all you sardine lovers to rise up and vote! Vote for your favorite sardine. Vote and leave a comment so the world knows your gastronomical pride.

I'm a hot sauce kind of sardiner myself.

My favorite sardines were served to me at a wonderful little restaurant on the isle of Sardinia.

They were deep fried - kinda like calamari - and were just terrific! A little parsley, lemon, oil and I'm there!

Don't want to throw the thread off-topic, but yes, Russians treat their vodka the way Japanese treat their tea; with lots of ceremony.

The vodka goes into the freezer and the bottle is then wrapped to keep it cold. It looks like white Karo syrup when it comes out of the bottle.

They eat sardines both in tomato sauce and oil, as well as sprats, then there's pickled tomatoes, mushrooms, cucumbers, and of course baked potatoes, many dense breads and always a plate of salt.

They like them big so they get hot and spicy!

You seem like the adventurous type, so you might also enjoy some of the stranger pickled mushrooms called slippery jacks. They are very tasty, but they produce a thick clear slime that some people can't deal with; it grosses them out.

I also have Cape Verdian friends who catch large sardines off Cape Cod and barbecue them out doors in the summer. Very different tasting than the canned ones, but they are also fantastic.

37. Fresh sardines! Yum!

Ate tons of little bitty fishies when I was in Calabria, heads and all. Oh my god--so fresh, pulled out of the water that very morning--the perfect way to eat them. And made into fritters, too. If I can't get them that way, then I'll take plain in oil, laid out on nice crusty Italian bread. Perfetto!

I dig mushrooms, too. When I was a vegetarian for a little while, I went on a portobello burger trip, where I would have these sandwiches on whole wheat with stuff like romaine lettuce and sundried tomatoes with mayo--totally satisfying! And there's nothing like a thick sour cream and mixed mushroom soup, all rich and earthy and creamy.

(Okay, I just like food.)

They taste like crunchy green beans but with the same okra-like slime coating. The hard part is finding them fresh, because they do not preserve well (don't try the canned ones or you will be put off).

they used a few different types, some were kind of oniony, others had a kind of "meaty" taste, though it wasn't really meaty. The krill tasted like sweet shrimp.

Not sure where you can buy krill, but I'm sure it's available, I think it's one of the more populous items in the ocean. Various types of seaweed are available in lots of health food stores.

Or, just straight out of the can, and share with the cat. Packed in water, though, the cat won't eat the oil packed tuna or sardines.
