Feanorcurufinwe, I love the photo of your puppy. I had wolf hybrids for 12 years, mother (Cerridwen) and son (Merlin). They were the most beautiful, smartest, most loving, and yes, most frustrating creatures I've ever known, and I consider myself privileged to have been accepted as their human. I lost them both a couple of years ago, Cerridwen from diabetes (she did not respond to human insulin) and Merlin from bone cancer. They died a few months apart.

My current dogs (Brisco and Bowler) are mutts from the pound, and I love them. I also had a hearing-ear dog, a Chow-black lab mix (Vincent), who was my faithful companion for 13 years, and who could never be replaced. But wolves... they are special. I live in the city now (Phoenix) and have a very small yard, but I look forward to having enough room one day to adopt more hybrids.

I don't have enough posts (yet) to email you privately, and I'm not much good with html, but I'll see if I can post some photos of my wolves sometime.

Excellent with children ... mild mannered, patient, essentially fearless, healthy, takes direction VERY well, loves to work, doesn't bark much.

Negatives: if you don't give them 'work' to do, they'll find work.
My Hank has pulled the knobs of the stove, chewed utensils and garbage, and liked to unroll toilet paper all thru the house when he was a puppy.

According to one book my daughter brought home from the school library, the oldest dog on record was a Cattle Dog, who lived to 26.

a Greyhound before it's put to death. Honestly, that's what they do after their "racing career" is over. They make wonderful pets, they're gentle, extremely loyal and a great looking dog. You'll need some room for it to excercise though, it's not an apartment dog.

Part Bulldog, part terrier, sort of like a pug. IMO, Bostons are the most 'human' of all dog breeds, they have wonderful personalities. That's why I like them.

sweetest, tongue flickering, loving little woofties on the planet.

EVERYTHING my lil Winky does makes me laugh out loud. Her genuine affection and love for being held, kissed, squeezed, tickled and played with. Her little snuffles in my ear when she's being schlepped on my shoulder... She is just so darned happy every waking moment... and I've found this with every maltese I've ever met.

Worldwide, I've found they have SO many traits in common, and my personal fave is the "porkchop" pose, and the 'half pork-chop, one up, one down.." Which is where the little cuties flop down on their tummies and splay their lil back legs straight out the back. That's the full pork chop. and when one lil leg is still tucked up under, that's the half pork chop.

Oh, and how about when they do the downward dog stretch in the morning? And they repeatedly criss cross their lil front paws, one over the other, as they're stretching? Awwwwwwwwwwwwww!

Maltese' ROCK. There's a REALLY tiny one at a friend's pet shop I'm SOOOOO tempted to get! She was a real runt, and only weighs 2.5 lbs at 12 weeks, but her name is THUMBELINA! But another high maintenance dog I can do with out. Winky gets car sick, can't take her ANYWHERE... Thumbelina eats only turkey... ***sigh***

Miniature Schnauzers: (2)
Snuggly dogs and not too yappy. Very intelligent but can be a bit "independent" and will take the passive-aggressive route if they do not want to do what you're asking. Would whistle non-chalantly if they knew how.

Jack Russell Terriers: (3)
Extremely intelligent and aggressively affectionate. Somewhat hyperactive (the male more so than the females, but we've got a nice big yard). We're perpetually thankful the JRTs do not have opposable thumbs.

they are the smartest dogs. I had Standard Poodles for over thirty years, my last one died a year and a half ago, they are really special dogs not matter which size you have. The one drawback of a Poodle is their hair having to be groomed but it wasn't enough of a drawback to keep me from having Poodles. Right now I just have a little mixed Sheltie breed that I found, sometime I would like to have a Poodle again. :-)

My apricot miniature turns 14 on Tuesday.

What a joy he has been, along with the miniature poodle who I had previously. He greets me at the door with one of his toys and a non-stop wag. He stands perfectly still while being bathed or clipped, and campaigns for his treasured walk around the block at virtually the same time every night.

Just the other day he snuck out the back gate when the lawn man did not shut it correctly, but instead of wandering away he scratched on the front door when he wanted to return inside. I can't believe how smart my poodles have been.

Sadly, my poodle is developing cataracts and cannot see very well anymore. The doctor says his eyes are too soft for the cataracts to be removed.

My Katie came from the Humane Society and she is the sweetest dog, although she's currently mad at me for giving her a bath last night. She's really cute-weighs about 45 pounds, is black, brown and white and looks kind of like a small German Shepard.
I have never seen a dog who is as good with kids as Katie is. She plays with my 3 and 1 year old nieces and lets them climb all over her without growling or anything but enthusiastic licking. She even barked at a family friend when that friend picked up the 12 month old, so she's protective, too.

dog happens to be a Rottweiler - they get such a bad rap. I think they are beautiful and if you get one from a good breeder they can be great family dogs.

I do volunteer work for a dog adoption group so the correct answer is whatever dog you like best.
But on a strictly personal level I'd have to say the Vizsla, which, if you don't know it, looks like a Weimaraner but a bit smaller. Hungarian in ancestry, all around great tempermant, incredibly beautiful. They're all one color: eyes, nose, lips, claws all a beautiful orangish brown.

I'd never heard of the breed, but 3 puppies wandered onto my daughter's employer's property. They were emaciated. She brought one home. We thought Bailey was a Beagle at first, but the vet suspected she was a Walker. It's a breed develped in Tennessee in the 1850s – a cross of various deer hounds and English hounds. I've read where these dogs can actually climb 10-15 feet up a tree, but they're usually trained by hunters to place their paws on the tree trunk and howl when they've treed a raccoon or possum.

Bailey is about 8 months old now, and has a beautiful disposition. She's taller than a Beagle and has longer ears and a longer nose and jowls. Wish I had a picture to post. This isn't her, but a similar looking Walker Hound:

Although I have a particular fondness for terriers, I really like most breeds. Still, mutts really are smarter and quirkier, "quirky" being a trait I value in dogs. My Sonya probably had six or seven different breeds in her heritage and was funny as hell. Where most dogs will pout or just bark if their bowl is empty and they're hungry, she would paw at the bowl until she turned it over, grab the rim in her teeth and throw the bowl at us. I'm not kidding. :D

Here is my beloved Barney, a former stud dog, rescued from a puppy mill. He was 10 or 11, had never lived with people and was not housebroken. I took a chance on him and he was perfect from day one. The dog I grew up with was a blonde cocker, so when I saw him on the local news as their pet of the week who was up for adoption, I called before the show was even over. They said he needed a ``special home'' because he spent his entire life at a commercial kennel and was not housebroken. He had the best temperament and was the best at going outside of any dog I have ever known. I think he's pretty special and your Windsor and Duchess remind me of my Barney.

106. It all depends on what you want in a dog

If you are "into" confirmation and looks and have an idea in your head about "your perfect dog", you will probably wnat a purebred version of that doggy...

If you are looking for a all round family dog that is good with kids and has a mellow disposition, you cannot go wrong with a Lab or Golden..but..they are big dogs, need lots of exersize, and they do not live long lives..

If you are looking for protection dogs who are fiercely loyal to one or a few people, you might want an Akita, Doberman, Shepherd,but be prepared to take a hit to the wallet for homeowners insurance or when you try to rent a place..

The best dogs ever, are usually the ones who NEED YOU.. I have always had pets and we have NEVER sought out an animal.. They have always FOUND us :shrug:..

I really do believe that they know you saved them, and they are eternally greatful to you..

We had a poodlemix who lived with us for 16 years before she died, and we had no idea how old she was when she adopted us :)

The way I look at it, you could also be asking "Best Ethinicity". I don't favor any dog differently just because they are a different type I breed, a dog has personality and I like he/she based on that.

We currently have 2 dogs. An Airedale(DAX - 7 yrs old, 70lbs) and a Chihuhua-terrier mix (Rhonda the ratdog - 14 yrs old, 8.5 lbs)

They are great dogs, we love them, but for our lifestyle - the mantra around the house is "NO MORE TERRIERS". Too much energy for us.

Rhonda has some kidney/liver problems, but at her age it's not that unusual. It's under control and being monitored.

Meanwhile, my partner and I have pretty much decided that the next dog will be an English Mastiff. My partner use to raise them years ago (at one point had 2 adults and 5 pups in the house), so she is familair with the pros/cons of the breed

When we are ready we'll be contacting a friend of my partners who is involved with a Mastiff rescue group.

127. MY Golden Retreiver is a Moose, but he sure is sweet.

He came from a puppy mill rescue 6 years ago, and while not show dog quality, he is on the large size at 95 lbs, he is great. No, he is not fat, he's just huge.

He is well trained, but its strange how some people respond to such a big dog, even happy, happy, please take me jome, flippy ears here. My 15 year old nephew, who is around 5'6, is terrifed of him, and he likes smaller dogs. In fact he owns a 15" beagle.

I asked him why he was afraid of him, as my 9 year old lead him away without a single tug, and he said, "He is just so big". He does need a lot of exersize, but he sure likes to retreive stuff.

BTW, he is Andrew the Cats sleeping partner. He just loves the dog to bits, and if he is cold you find him lying on the dogs tail on the dogs rug, purring loudly. Pal, the dog, just love this.

That was the best dog ever. He was great with kids, didn't do a lot of unnecessary licking of himself or us. My dad found him at the lot where they parked the trucks he drove. His name was Hank. That was the best damn dog I think I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. He was my dad's best friend. And he took care of me too.

If you have the time for exercise and the patience for discipline the German Shepherd is an amazing companion. The intelligence of this dog is something to behold because its almost human (and definitely exceeding a certain President). i had the pleasure of raising one from a puppy when my roomie got one. They're best if you have more than one willing owner in the house who will pay attention to it. Theyre great family dogs, but you should never trust a large dog (or any dog for that matter) around small children or infants - especially if you have a child after getting the dog.

The Keeshond is a member of the Spitz family of northern dogs. Originally most popular in the Netherlands, it descended from the German Wolfspitz and thus is a close relative to the Pomeranian. Throughout the 18th century, the breed was used in the Netherlands as a "dog of the people." As a good watchdog, companion, and swimmer, it was commonly found in villages, farms and on the barges in the Dutch canals. During a period of unrest in Holland, the dog became the mascot for the Patriot party, which was led by Kees de Gyselaer, and thus the name "dog of Kees" or "Keeshond" was assigned to the breed. Although it was exhibited at Dutch shows in the late 1800's, the breed did not gain popularity elsewhere until the 1920's. Today the breed is appreciated by those who want a good family pet. While it is suited to city-living, the Kees does need daily outdoor exercise.
