Fer gawd's sake, why doesn't curling ribbon *curl* anymore?

I mean, I learned this skill at my mother's knee, and it used to work great. But these days, all the "curling" ribbon I buy just lays there.

The ribbon's made in the US, not China (I just went and looked.) And, I've discovered that s--l--o--w over the blade does the trick.
