does anyone else love to watch the Bonus/Special Feathures on DVDs?

Right now, I'm watching the bonus dvd of 'A Beautiful Mind', and I'm loving it! It's secretly one of my favorite parts of watching a new DVD, especially with the movies I really like. It's just so facinating to me. My friends and family get bored and think I'm nuts, but I know I can't be the only one...

Anyone else find the behind-the-scenes info on movies totally interesting? Name your favorite DVDs with cool bonus material :)

2. Main reason I got a DVD player

was for the special features. I love deleted scenes and directors/actors commentary. Especially on dialog driven films. I'm also a fan of "making of" featurettes.

I have been known to watch a movie, love it, then watch it again with the commentary. Drives my wife nuts, but if I love a movie, I am "gung ho" about it, especially after I have just watched it.

I always make sure to go to IMDB.com and read the trashing, umm, I mean reviews of it. Seriously, though, does anyone who ever posts a review on IMDB.com ever have anything good to say about any film? I don't think I have ever read a positive comment. LOL

:hi: and I am like you - I love to watch the whole darn movie all over again with the commentary, especially if someone funny/interesting is talking about it - it is so informative and interesting. It's like seeing the film in a whole new light.

4. Absolutely! It's the only reason to have DVDs!

And I hated Beautiful Mind. COuld have been great, but Ron Howard, in all his half-ass-talent Ron Howardness, managed to ruin it like he has done with every other movie he made.

But, anyway, I love the special features, and will always buy the most feature-laden version of a DVD - because I love all the commentaries, behind the scenes stuff, the "making of" stuff, and everything else.

The only thing I don't get into is when they include pictures. I find scrolling through them to be tedious...

also I love Paul Bettany, he is amazing. But you're right about "Ron Howardness" :D - his movies tend to be overly schmaltzie and dripping with sap.

I often feel guilty about it. Feels awfully selfish.

But, man, I LOVE movies and always have. And love everything about the making of them. Find it fasincating. Such a wonderful form of art.

Though I won't listen to Howard's commentary (assuming he has one). I can't stand to hear him speak because the whole time I'm thinking "You've ruined everything you've touched! Why did anyone let you direct this movie! They should know better! ARGH!!!"

Not that he's awful - I don't think he makes rotten movies. But he has a style of movie making that constantly makes me feel "Dammit, that was almost a good movie, but it's schmaltzed and heavy-handed and artistically VERY thin, ARGH!"

on RH! i have always loved movies too. one of my good friend's husband was a cinematographer - he filmed parts of many movies, 'Pulp Fiction' being one of them, and he is in the Bonus Feature - i really got a kick out of that :)

7. DVDs

Are new tech to this old man. And I only have two DVDs. One (Do not laugh) is Amadeus. The bonus showed the faces of the real people. The difference between them and their movie character was astounding.

My other DVD is FMJ. Why? Just so.

20. I am enamored

of Mozart's music. I like the movie. Did you know the original play was written by Pushkin the poet, contemporary of Mozart's? (So I have read)

A quote from Pushkin; "You Mozart though you do not know it are a God."

Also two of my German Shepherd dogs were named Pushkin. (By error I might add)

14. Coppolla's commentary on the "Godfather" DVD is awesome.

Teaches a lot about how movies are made, and about the history behind this particular one.

19. The Magnificent Seven

Has a good documentary showing how the film came to be, with comments from the then surviving cast and crew members. Very interesting.

I like bloopers that accompany comedies. Dodgeball and Starski & Hutch had good "making of's" Sometime alternate endings. I could never get into deleted scenes.

wtf? tho, lol! but, i do like deleted scenes - sometimes they help tell the story even better and were just cut for time consraints.

i do agree about comedies and bloopers :D

21. Doctor Who!

I admit I am a total Dr Who geek, and I find the commentary on the DVDs absolutely fascinating. The Dalek Invasion of Earth, for example (the 1960s TV serial with William Hartnell, NOT the appalling Peter Cushing movie) features the producer, Verity Lambert, as well as Carole Ann Ford who played Susan. An absolute treasure trove of information. And by the way, this DVD also features some other great stuff-- an "information text" option which has subtitles providing even more fascinating facts; and they even went to the trouble to redo many of the 1960s special effects in full present-day computer generated glory! You can turn the "new" special effects on and off so you can see both the original and new versions. It's quite a contrast between the 1960s Dalek saucer (a model where you can actually see the strings) and the cool new version.
