If she's your teacher and you've told her you're having trouble comprehending your assignments, then likely it means "Let's see if I can help you out with better understanding, maybe find you some resources or a tutor."

If she's your sweetheart and you're trying to get to homeplate, then likely it means that as much as she cares she doesn't really feel ready yet. But maybe there are some other options she's willing to explore.

And then there's that character thing. Is she a person given to saying 'yes' when she means 'yes,' and 'no' when she means 'no?' Or is she likely to hedge and say 'maybe' to all inquiries?

If the question is business-related, then it probably means she is unable to make the decision without the approval of another, and she's probably being honest. Either that or, she thinks the answer is no, and she wants to avoid letting you down at this time.

If the question is romatically-related, that seems like a strange answer, and I wouldn't be too positive. In fact, if I got that answer to a romantically-related question, I'd probably post about it here, too.

It really depends on a person's temperament. I for one rarely ever agree outright to do anything, because I cannot assume complete control of all of the relevant factors. I just say that I'll see about it, and then later announce successful completion of whatever I'd agreed to try to do. 'Cause it would suck to break a promise.

For some people, "I'll try" is a dodge, and really means no; for others, it's an honest statement of intent.

Of course, I dunno what exactly the person who inspired this thread had agreed to "try" to do...
