I got the new U2 album for Christmas.

THere are many dissenting opinions. Some have said that the album ranks very close up there with "Actung Baby" and "The Joshua Tree". Others have said that it is shit. My opinion after listening to it straight through is closer to the former. "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" is a great record and if you cannot see a single shred of good that came out of it, you must be brain dead. It felt like it was very emotional and spiritual in some spots, while it was rollicking in others. Some of the music reminded me of The Joshua Tree though, you can't in good conscience say that it is as good as The Joshua Tree, but I maintain that it is close to as good as that album. I really like it and recommend it to anyone who is willing to give something an objective listen.


On another note, the other album that I picked up was Yes' "Close to the Edge". Excellent album for anyone who likes Prog Rock.

They're diminishing their body of work by diluting it with retread records - they've been seriously treading water ever since Zooropa. It's annoying, because there are some generally great records in their back catalogue that don't deserve that kind of dilution.

All that You Can't Leave Behind ranks up there with the Joshua Tree as far as I am concerned.

And the current release is powerful. It always takes me a few listenings to adjust to their adjustments, but I always end up appreciating their work. "Miracle Drug" moves me but I also like "City of..." and "Vertigo" and many others.

I love that part!!!! I may be falsely interpreting it, but I think he's talking about God's love and how it impacts all positive human endeavors. Being done with (earthly) "romantic love" and being ready for a (Heavenly) "miracle" drug is pretty cool.

And I think the "noise" and "din" is the arguments about how God and Science can co-exist.

When "All That You Can't Leave Behind" was released, Bono said that he wasn't "done with the music yet". As far as I'm concerned, he's not done with the music yet, either. I got the new one yesterday. Luckily for me, their CD's are so packed that it takes the length of time between albums for me to digest the previous one.

If you'd like to talk about "diminished body of work," I'd be happy to discuss "artists" such as J-Ho, Britney Spears, and Celine Dion. U2 isn't even in that equation.

Have you listened to the CD? I think the CD took on a whole new meaning after September 11th, especially "Walk On".

It's your opinion. My opinion is that I'll be happy to listen to the "non-progressive" "retread" U2 as long as they're making records.

16. I listened to it several times.

Most of the songs were variations on previous U2 songs - Walk On was One, Stuck In A Moment was Angel of Harlem, Beautiful Day is a retread of the first two albums with some of New Years Day thrown in, Elevation is a hodge-podge of the worst parts of Pop (Discoteque, Last Night on Earth etc) - and so on.

I think "Kite," which Bono often dedicates to his late father, to be a powerfully emotional song.

"Walk On" got me through the 2000 election aftermath.

Really, the entire album is pretty good. I feel the same way about "How to Dismantle...."

I think my least favorite album was "Zooropa," but I cut them slack because they recorded it while in the midst of one of the largest tour productions every taken on the road (ZooTv). Their last tour, in support of All That You Can't.... was the best I have seen them playing.

That even if, as people say, it isn't as good Joshua Tree, its still U2, and anything U2 does is better then 95% of the crap big music puts out.

I love U2 and I will always love U2. No matter what they do, they are still, by far, one of the greatest bands ever. :)
