3. Yeah, you really need the both option.
I've watched parts of it on TV and it is both brilliant and racist. DW Griffith absolutely broke ground with narrative techniques on film. Too bad he did it in a movie that glorifies race hatred, or we'd be watching it regularly today.

4. It is groundbreaking with regard to technique and storytelling
but based on a horrible book named "The Klansman"...

He went on to make Intolerance as sort of a punishment for Birth of a Nation.
