1. I vote for Seaweed.

Actually, could the Posies claim to have "gone somewhere?" It ain't like they acheived Soundgardenesque fame and fortune.

And if you consider Portland an annex to Seatlle (an insult to Seattleites, I'm sure), then my vote would go to Pond.

It may be because they were a bit removed from the whole "grunge" thing, I guess.

4. They were, although with "Frosting on the Beater"

they sure did try to beef up their sound in order to qualify for for "grunge" status.

I thought they were the best band of that whole scene and era, even though, yes, they did stand apart, and had gotten a major label deal before Nirvana.

Still, Seaweed was more uptempo than the others, and slightly more melodic, so I voted for them, too.

I thought Pond was really underrated, too (if we're talking about the SubPop bands)

And I can remember when MTV actually tried to convince people that Cinicnnati was to be the "next Seattle" as well.

Screaming Trees had modest success with the "Sweet Oblivion" CD. And I left out Mudhoney since they were (and still are) a huge cult band.

...but I liked them better than PJ. Better hooks and less self-conscious. They were too early in the curve to make it big, plus like you said, they had the death of the lead singer to deal with and splintered from there.

Technically OlympiaWA, but were on seattle's subpop records...

some of the best lo-fi ever.

20. Mudhoney WERE grunge.

They were the only band out of that scene truly deserving of that title. The first time I heard Mudhoney, they blew my mind (it may have been the ganja I smoked, too, but I digress). They rocked. I didn't have the heart to include them in the poll, though.

16. The Sonics

kickass garage-rock band from the 60s. They had a couple of minor regional hits but never hit it huge.

25. Tad,but Mudhoney and the Melvins are the best thing

to come out of that scene.

But the first two Tad cd's are great!

Gruntruck and SkinYard were basically the same band.Good,but not great.

almost as good, if not better in certain ways, than the original.

Or Temple of the Dog, which kinda reminds me of The Traveling Wilburys, a group with a lot of great musicians that should have been way more popular then they were. :(
