Woman's Body Found In Car Under Ice In Lake

PORTERSVILLE, Pa. -- Divers searching a frozen lake found the body of a 55-year-old woman who apparently had been driving in circles on the ice and may have been lost, officials said.

The body of Betty L. Martof was found in a car submerged in 12 feet of water in Moraine State Park's Lake Arthur on Tuesday, one day after park officials reported vehicle tracks leading to a hole in the ice.

Authorities believe she drove onto a snowmobile trail that led onto the lake and then drove on the ice for about a half-mile, making tracks in tight circles, before the ice broke.

Martof, of Warren, Ohio, sometimes got disoriented, said sister-in-law Arlene Martof.

"She would drive and not know where she was going," Martof said. "She would get on the turnpike and drive and not know where to get off."

2. There are some people who just shouldn't drive

I don't mean to be heartless either, because that's a sad thing to happen to anyone. Working on a road crew, I used to see people who drove by what could only be auto pilot. We were blasting a new road through a mountain - it was all rough rock and dirt. You could barely get a backhoe over it and one day this little old lady drove right past all the huge barricades with signs that said things like DANGER!, DO NOT ENTER!, BLASTING ZONE! - past me, who was frantically leaping in front of her car with arms waving, and straight on through the construction site. Never even saw her brake lights go on. People like that shouldn't be driving.
