Breakfast with a dog:

The setting:

The human sits down at the table to eat a muffin and a banana, and drink some milk. Dog sits a respectful 18-24 inches away, eyes fixed like lasers on said human and his breakfast.

Human: *munch*

Dog: "What is that thing, Dad? I don't believe I've ever tasted one of those. Is it good? It sure smells good. Do you think dogs would like those? I like most things you eat. *drool* Are you going to be able to eat all of that? It looks pretty big for just one Dad to eat all by himself. Oh my, is that a banana??? I like bananas. Remember the other day when you gave me some banana? That was good. *drool* "

Human: *swallows last of the milk*

Dog: "That means you're done eating, right? Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! *excited dancing, prancing, wiggling and all-purpose happiness stuff* Is there something left for me, Dad? You always leave me something. You are such a good Dad! I loooooooooove you, Dad!"

Human: *puts plate on floor and pats dog's head*

Dog: *frenzy of slurping, licking, munching and tail-wagging*

That pretty much sums up breakfast at our house. How about the rest of you dog owners?

Then the dogs come racing in, and things really get going!

I remember making Christmas cookies when I was a kid. Our two hounds would wait patiently in the kitchen. Something inside me made me pretend to burn the first batch. Heck, I had to have somebody try them out, right?

the cat actually gets up on the table or on our shoulders, reaches for the spoon, and attempts to waylay it between bowl and mouth (or the muffin - trying to lick the butter).

Having grown up with dogs, I was used to the laser eyes and attempted Jedi Mind Tricks. Not used to actual intervention in the eating process.

He's pretty good about begging - the extent of which only involves staring at me patiently until I give him the last bite of whatever I'm eating...

Scarlett has a food allergy, so we don't give her much in the way of scraps. Sonya, though, used to sit completely motionless while we ate, burning a hole through our foreheads. I looked up once and realized that she had a drool thread going all the way from the corner of her mouth to the floor. :D

Bandit prances around my desk all day waiting for a crumb. Tuna sandwich at lunch drives her nuts, drool all over the place. Total pavlovian mess, but we love her.

10. Our Dog, a Papillon-Mix We Got from the Animal Shelter,

has always been rather vocal in her demands to be included in the chow line. She will utter a low-pitched growl, sometimes punctuated by other vocalizations while growling - rrrow rrow RRROWW. Sometimes she whines softly, holding a note for a very long time. She's absolutely crazy for chocolate, and I chastise my wife & sons for giving her any, because I know it's bad for her. She doesn't seem to have suffered any ill affects from the bits of chocolate (so far), but they're going to feel really bad if she goes into anaphylactic shock.

12. Buddy (my beagle) doesn't beg, but

he's made drooling on my foot an art form. He'll just sit there patiently and drool, because he knows eventually he'll get something, even if it's only just a crumb. That's even if he just had his own breakfast minutes before. Mine must be SOOOOO much better than his.

20. Dogs and food

We have 5 dogs - 2 greys, 2 whippets and a Siberian Husky and yeah, it sounds familiary. When we put the baby in her highchair, she is instantly surrounded by puppy love. She has learned to very deliberately feed treats to each one so that they all get something off her plate. With the whippets, if either my husband or I drink a glass of milk, we have to give them some (whippets are one of the few dogs past puppyhood that are able to drink milk in quantity without getting sick). And if my husband has peanutbutter toast for breakfast, the results are much the same as you describe with our husky - same for tunafish.

22. You Have Perfectly Described My House

If it's something the cats like too, we'll smear some on a separate plate and then take the dog downstairs in the rec room where we eat. Then the kitties get some of the goodies too, because they can't compete with him in the eating department. (Combined cat weight, <20#. Dog, 110#)

However, my dog is required to call me "Sir". Not "dad". He is also required to read books on economics. It's very strict around here.

23. Breakfast at my house:

the dogs don't get excited over it. They never get any. They do watch me like a hawk when I get up and down to get coffee. They predict which room I'll sit down in with the coffee cup, and maneuver to see who gets the closest to my chair. Their goal in life is to stay in constant contact. I have one foot for each, so it works out.

My old guy doesn't move too well; it's hard for him to get up and down. He'll stand in the hall, which is the center of the cottage, watching me go back and forth, waiting for me to pick a spot so he can settle in, too.

My youngster watches him, and moves in at the last moment to make sure she gets the most "contact;" he's a foster dog, she was here first, and while she doesn't mind sharing a little, she wants everyone to know that I'm HER mom, and you move into her territory only with HER permission. So right now, she is at my feet, and he is directly behind me.

Mine don't get any scraps, however. Sensitive doggie tummies are not fun for doggies or mom who has to clean up from sensitive doggie tummies (and other unmentionable doggie parts).

One of mine however, has been "trained" to NOT beg. What that means is, if I look over at her to see if she's begging, she averts her eyes. "Nope, nope, mom, I wasn't just sitting here boring a hole through your head. Nope, nope, I wasn't begging, honest."

29. My dog likes to be hand fed by a woman in a scenic location

so I walk him in the woods every morning with a bag of assorted treats. We have "picnic spots" where we stop and rest and I feed him his marrow bones, beggin strips, snaps, scooby treats, and so on in the exact order in which he likes them. All of the other dogs who walk there know that his mom is the "treat lady" so if they are discreet and polite (and don't make the little king mad) they may get a treat too.

He's twelve years old, a 5-year cancer survivor, and I love him to bits.

He only gives me the begging look if I am cooking meat for dinner: "I can't believe you're even thinking of eating that without me".

Dogs - *wags - stare - both rest heads on knee and go into maximum sympathy extraction mode (including fake limp) *

Me - *lick, smack, gulp* Oh jesus, you just can't believe how amazing this steak is, so juicy, it just melts in your mouth with just the right amount of salt and pepper. And it's such a huge piece, I just don't know what I'm gonna do with it"

Dogs - *mega-stare with begging eyes*

Me - *finishes entirety of dinner and licks plate clean*

Moral - Food is wasted on dogs, they eat it too quick to appreciate the good stuff.

Reality - I give them things sometimes - if it didn't work they wouldn't beg, right?
