I've worn hearing aids for the past fifteen years (I'm 39, three days away from turning 40). The pair I had before this one I was able to get ten years of use out of before they finally conked out, which is pretty good. Last year, I had to get a new pair. The goddamn things are so fucking expensive, and insurance doesn't pay a damned dime of it, unlike with glasses.
They tried to sell me the digital ones, which are great because they filter out a lot of excess noise; they're WAAAAAYY too expensive, though. I got the least expensive pair, and that cost $4,000; I'm STILL paying off the loan for them and, since they keep adding finance charges and fees to keep the balance the same, I'll probably be paying on it for the next fifty years.
Anyway, I get free cleaning and repairs (I'd better goddamn well get it, for that price!), and for the 18 months I've had them, I've had to take them into the shop at least EIGHT times! I almost never had to take the previous pair in for service. Well, just this morning, I had to take them in YET AGAIN, right when I need them for later today. It's very hard to work without them. They apparently get plugged up easily and have to be cleaned more. "That's just the way the new ones are", they casually tell me. So, not only do they cost two arms and two legs more, but they need a lot more service and cleaning and always RIGHT WHEN I NEED THEM MOST! ARRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!
Whew, there, I feel at least a little better now!!!!
