HELP LEFTPEOPLEFINISHFIRST GO TO DC!
Fellow DUers,

Some of you might know that during the summer I was accepted to the National Youth Leadership Conference in Washington,DC. This conference is a 6 day long government and politics simulation. In addition to attending press conferences, sightseeing, and other trips, we get to simulate Congress and the President in situations. It is really a unique opportunity for me, because I am so interested in politics. My mom has told me this is going to be a real strain on the financial situation, because it's almost 2000 dollars + expenses. Both of my parents are teachers, so we're not rich. I told her I would try and raise some money to pay her back, and that's where I could use your help.

If you would like to help me out a little, I have set up a page at http://www.maggister.com/washingtonsupport.htm . Here, you can access my webstores, where I can receive one dollar profit from each of the items. I have also set up a PayPal donation link, which you can use if the items do not interest you. I'm asking you DUers as my friends, to help me out a little bit. Please do not feel guilty if you can't do anything right now, I realize a lot of people are really strapped for cash around here (especially with Bush in office ;)). I hope you can do something to help me. Keep this thread kicked up for me, please.

Once again,

Good luok in going to DC. btw like the site, I wish I could have a site period but I wouldnt manage it well.

It is this cool site that prints items for you called cafepress. All I have to do is make the images, they print and ship them. For free, it's kinda cool. I make a dollar off each item (the rest they keep)

36. a shame it has to cost so damn much....should be an opportunity for any...
.....and all students to be able to experience...all expences PAID....yet another reminder that MORE funding is needed for education...and a program like this should be a mandatory trip to expose our youth to the importance of government and why it's THE single most valuable possession we the people have...and how nothing else matters more in their lives.......ahhhh...they say I'm a dreeeeamer....but I'm not the only one ;-)

7. Please support this effort folks!!!
Having worked on the Hill (I was a legislative aid in a Congressional Office - a democratic congressman from California) when I was a law student in D.c. -- I am very familiar with this program.

It is a bit of a Con job (kinda corporate) but is ultimatley VERY educational and worthwhile. I think Clinton was in it and met JFK (that famous photo of them shaking hands) while there (but am not 100% sure).

Anyway -- Just imagine the impact of future democracy when our "left people finish first" DUer gets up in a group session and says: "If you want to know anything about democracy and the free expression of ideas you all need to check out a very progressive website called democraic underground and you need to make your voices heard in one of the most visible political websites in the world." And "Write this DOWN: Democraticunderground.com. You CAN make a difference and be heard by THOUSANDS of people EVERY DAY"

Anyway. PLEASE try to support this young woman.

LPFF: we need more info: WHEN does this event happen? How much money do you need and for what purposes? Let us see what the budget breakdown is: how much is tuition? travel? How will you go? Does the tuition include hotel and travel or do you have to stay in THEIR hotels and with their chaperones?

Meals? Taxis? Sightseeing $$$ Metro is GREAT in DC and you SHOULD see the Smithsonian, the National Zoo, the lincoln death bed (across from the Ford theater near the Washington Mall JFK/RFK's tombs at Arlington cemetary and I recommend the Botanical garden a few blocks from the Capitol BLDG right on the Mall as well as the Vietnam Wall and Lincoln Memorial right next to it. ALL of these are within walking distance of the metro and can be done in short bursts for a few hours except JFK/RFK's tomb which is in Arlington and is a halfhour ride on the metro but VERY moving for progressives and a MUST see (the memorial is very impressive with speech excerpts that will blow you away) .

I plan to donate a few bucks if you put your "budget" up here and what you need (and what you can put in yourself).

This is a good DU investment -- especially if LPFF speaks out and promotes DU at one of the events where people speak out on their own backgrounds. This is OUR future too.

Anyway -

8. My advice: just send her the money directly - don't spend $$$ so she gets
only a buck each.

If each of us sends $5 or $10 or $20 it will only take a hundred or so of us to pay her way:

The first DU scholarship fund.

I will pledge $10 if you post your budget and explain the timetable as well as your precise needs from spending $$$ to detailed expense list.

Overview of program:

In keeping with NYLC’s theme - The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today - the program uses the resources of Washington, D.C. to give students a greater understanding of their roles in our democracy and the responsibilities of leadership. As part of the conference curriculum, students work through role-playing exercises involving an international crisis, a session of Congress and a Supreme Court case. The conference challenges participants to assess problems, contribute to group discussions and assume roles in various situations. Through these hands-on experiences, students develop important leadership skills by learning to evaluate critical information, form and advocate positions and make decisions.

NYLC scholars also meet the men and women who shape our laws and policies. Students gain insiders’ perspectives when discussing key issues with Cabinet secretaries, members of Congress, diplomats, lobbyists, journalists and academicians. Interaction with accomplished leaders gives students direct experience and guidance that cannot be found in textbooks.

Let us know.

26. Kick in for LPFF!!!
Keep kicking this a few times a day folks until she reaches her goal.

Maggie - is there a "fee" for the conference and can you get "scholarships" from them? Have you tried local businesses or even your Congressional offices to seek "sponsors" who will donate?

The cost for foos can be significantly reduced if you eat cheap, buy grocery food and the Capitol cafeterias are pretty cheap too (I used to eat at the library of Congress cafeteria which is very reasonable - the hotel and local restaruants cater to businesses and charge a heap.

I have to put money in my account to cover a "withdrawal" when I get paid. But I think if we all giove a few bucks it will really help (and we want a full daily blog)

29. The fee for the conference
Is the 1200 dollars, but that includes lodging as well as all museum and tourist kind of fees, food for breakfast and dinner, and admission to other places, not just the conference.

On the information sheet they said find your own lunch, and it would be around 7-11 dollars. Some days I might not even eat lunch, I don't get that hungry. I'm sure it won't be a problem.

Additionally,
Before I verify everyone's donations (I've gotten quite a few) I need to verify my account with my bank account number (eh, i'm not too keen on this but I suppose it's OK and Mom said it was) for my savings account. So don't worry if your credit cards or PayPal accounts haven't been charged yet, I am working on it. :)

34. There are a lot of young folks on this board, huh
I am unable to do a poll.

But an age range poll would really be interesting.

Seems like those who want to give LPFF $$$ are her peers.

Where are the old 60's antiwar hippes and grandfolks who could help.

Keep passing the cap for Maggie, folks, and SAY you are giving.

THANKS, LPFF, for the budget breakdown. Sounds like a decent deal.

What I did while travelling in Israel (where my tickets were paid for but only breakfast included) was I would grab a water , a juice, an apple and maybe a bagel from the breakfast Buffet (which was awesome with middle eastern yummies, olives, figs, dates, pummelo, plums jaffa oranges, etc. PLUs eastern european delicacies like fish and salmon, lox, ) Anyway, fill your knapsack and save lots of money and treat yourself when you want to with the $$ you save.

WHERE ARE THE GROWNUPS WHO CAN SPARE A FEW BUCKS???

and would anybody consider doing an age poll for me? I am amazed at how many young folks are here. I'd love to know our demographic on age

62. Just put some cash in the kitty for you, Maggie...
Let us know how it's going, and how far you are from your $ goal.

You're extraordinarily bright and gifted -- it's great to see you so involved.

Take care -- :hi:

Where you can make a difference and all I can do is kick in a buck or two here and there.

Let us know how much we've helped through a PM. I'll help as much as I can....

67. See if your local tv station
or newspaper can get the word out. One young man did it here in N. Cal. Plus, there are many non-profit groups in your area, like maybe the VFW who might want to sponsor you.

I'm sure you'll do yourself (and D.U.) proud. I added a bit to your PayPal account. Glad I can help out.
