Poll question: Clash Of The Titans: Favorite Sketch Comedy Troupe?
If you pick SNL, you suck.

3. Monty Python
for all-time fav comedy troupe. They've had too many classic bits and spawned too many late-night drunken recitalfests. :D

Of the current crop, MADTV is the best. Consistently original, cutting-edge writing.

4. MadTV is only SLIGHTLY better than SNL
But SNL is complete shit these days. It's really hard to believe that show was ever funny these days.

5. I'm holding out for "The Frantics" ...
But I'll settle for SCTV. (Dave Thomas's dad went to college with my dad, and he's the one who did the marriage ceremony for my folks more than 40 years ago ...)

7. That was rough
I like them all, but I had to prop up UCB. I wish they would rerun that or put out a DVD.

8. Agreed
Glad you voted for them. I feel like I should have voted for The State instead of Mr. Show, but I had to go with my head rather than my heart.

I've seen all the episodes from downloading them from Kazaa, since I didn't get Comedy Central when it was originally on.

18. melonville and guy caballero thank you for your support
their sendup of "China Town" with "Polonesian Town" with dr john and that ending crane shot are the funniest thing they did.

i have 30 vcds filled with their shows.

johnny la rue is a personal hero and roll model for me.

whenever i'm doubtful, i ask "what would johnny do?" then usually i grovel.

i nearly choked to death laughing when a drunken dave thomas came on as an early morning priest to read the sermon from the "Book of Caucasians."

that show was so damn funny each episode. i thought that andrea martin was the best of all considering the number of roles and what she did with them......edith prickly doing cabaret in the melonville men's steam bath room is classic.

15. Laugh-in or MadTV
Laugh-in started it all!

MadTV is far more edgy, zany, and even funnier than SNL, even though the last couple of years it has paled. SNL lost it in the early 90s and I'm amazed they're still beating the dead horse with their lamentable, unfunny sketches. In the 70s and 80s, it seemed touch and go at times as well but had enough "go" to keep it from getting cancelled.

As I love zany, edgy stuff, it makes sense I like both these shows.

Okay, I only saw an infomercial and read a few websites devoted to Laugh-in, but I was cracking up so therefore I think I can say it was good when the DVD hasn't even arrived until next week yet.

"Don't go back, I'll be right away!" Lovely line... :D I should use that line at work, just to see how people respond.

16. What about "In Living Color" and "The Edge"?
ILC was AWESOME in its first season. Then they won an award and it got to their heads, season 2 was very un-funny. Season 3 nearly approached season 1's standards and had a great episode spoofing music videos (though the re-run of the ep replaced the Crystal Waters spoof with a real group doing a #, which was even more of a joke except the group wasn't any good.) Seasons 4 and 5 were naff.

"The Edge" was a precursor to MadTV and shared some of the same cast - notably Wayne Knight if I recall correctly. (one of them also went to "Friends" afterwards, Jennifer Anniston actually...) Very edgy and they had some great outrageous stuff - even crude at times, but that qualifies as being outrageous too. They had a hilarious spoof of "The Fly", which was basically the day of a life of a fly from the fly's viewpoint. Of course, all the fly did was buzz around a picnic table and back yard by the dog, asking "Where's the feces?" in a high-pitched squeaky voice, but its presentation was very funny nonetheless.

26. Monty Python. No question.
Not just because they were hilariously funny, but also because they were (and are) hugely influential. Try to imagine most even ANY of these groups doing sketch comedy without Monty Python as influence and inspiration.
