I agree with the characters going on a downward spiral. It was sad. I felt sad for all of them. :-(

6. One of my favorites... |
|
As you said the downward spiral is really hard to watch...the problem is that even at the worst parts, I'd find myself laughing over the most horrible scenes (the nut with the firecrackers for instance).
Paul Thomas Anderson's best movie...

11. The firecracker scene is one of my favorite scenes of all time |
|
in any movie. I've never seen so many powerful emotions span a single scene, I'm in awe of the people who wrote it.

Alfred Molina was the guy with the Night Ranger mix tape
who was also Dr. Otto Octavius in Spider Man 2
also Satipo in Raiders of the Lost Ark "Throw me the idol. No time to argue. Throw me idol, I'll throw you the whip."

It is a better adaption of the "Wonderland killings" and better film starring Val Kilmer. Even more downward spiral though.

12. "Wonderland" is also great |
|
One of the things that I particularly enjoyed (and some reviewers had problems with) was that Holmes was already in his downward spiral when the film begins (we don't get to see his "glory days") which is actually unusual for film narratives. Val Kilmer is the most under-rated actor working today. He is much more than just a pretty face.

It was one of those that just makes you uncomfortable as you watch it get worse and worse. Still, Kilmer was good.

9. It is a great and disturbing movie... |
|
My best friend thought that it was ruined by a "tacked on happy ending" I disagreed. Any sense of "happiness" at the ending was merely a brief respite before the introduction of crack and AIDS in the porn industry. Things are only going to get worse for the characters. Brilliant script Brilliant performances Brilliant direction An American Masterpiece

makes a great baptist preacher in that movie. I've met quite a few preachers that were very much like the character he played in that movie.

16. I have it on DVD and love it |
|
Yes, it is disturbing in how free wheeling everyone was regarding sleeping with anyone....I couldn't believe people actually got it on in the DRIVEWAY! Swingin' 70s I guess. I was a kid for most of the 70s so I don't know.
