Good Luck meals on New Year's Eve...what's yours?

We used to eat sauerkraut on New Year's Eve for good luck. My sister in South Carolina has to have black-eyed peas. And they eat them on New Year's Day.

My husband and I agreed that we didn't get as much good luck in 2004 as we had hoped for. We slacked on the traditional good luck stuff last year too and decided this year we're doing it up. We're going to eat EVERYTHING lucky we can find. :9 Help us out. What's on the menu and should we eat it tonight, tomorrow or when?

I believe this is an English tradition , but my father always had us eat pork and saurkraut on New Years Day for good luck in the coming year.

My family has an English and German background, so I suppose that's why we always had saurkraut. My mom would cook it with big chunks of pork, onions and potatoes.

5. New Year's Day Menu

At our house we always have corned beef and cabbage for New Year's Day dinner. I usually roast the corned beef in the oven and steam the cabbage in the microwave. My mother passed on the tradition of including a coin in the cabbage to bring luck (and money) for the new year. I have a special silver dime that I include with the cabbage each year. We're not big fans of cooked cabbage at our house but we all eat some for good luck.

7. Well, I don't know about luck, but for NYE, I've already set out:

A crockpot full of meatballs in sweet and sour sauce

Sausage, smoked salmon, cream cheese, olives, crackers

Chex Mix and nuts

Leftover Christmas cookies

Smoked gouda and Swiss cheeses


For tomorrow, we plan to go out for Chinese food.

cook stuff from hotdogs to steak. Have a good meal and if/when I overindulge, I got all my food already cooked, if I can eat of course.

You cook the peas with ham hock or some other pork thing and onions, hot pepper of some kind and some garlic.

When beans are done you can either put the beans on top of the rice or combine them.


This year I have fresh black eyed peas (heavenly), pork jalapeno sausage, and will make a pan of cornbread too.
