Surely you know about diminishing marginal utility. Some people like certain specific things more than others, which causes them to exchange so many steaks for widgets. It's basic economics.
Maybe that's not what you were referring to.

I remember an economics class way, way, back in the Before Times.

The professor had a box of those bitchin' little powdered donuts and gave us a real life example.
