Mike B and I went to the Detroit Tiger game (42-119) tonight

The Tigers, down 8-0 in the top of the fifth, scored once in the bottom of the fifth, three times in the seventh, four more in the eighth and one in the ninth (on an Alex Sanchez walk, steal of second, steal of third and wild pitch) and beat the AL Central Champion Minnesota Twins, 9-8.
It was the biggest come-from-behind win by Detroit since 1965 (against the Kansas City A's).
At worst, the Tigs will finish 42-120 (and 43-119 with a win) which, however you slice it, still beats the Mets' 1962 record of 40-120. We can't set a new MLB loss record and the kids have something positive to take home for the off-season.

I was 0-6 this year at Comerica. I'm sure happy the Tigs won tonight.

Detroit? I didn't know they still had a team. Sorry, I was paying attention to the grown-ups in Major League Baseball (Yankees, Red Sox, Braves, A's, Twins, Mariners, Cubs, Astros, Marlins, Giants, etc.)

I've been an A's fan since 1983. Plenty of bad--but not as bad as the 2003 Tigers--seasons since then.

No American League team has ever been as bad as the 2003 Tigers. But they still rallied from an eight-run deficit to beat the Central Division champs. I thought that was worth mentioning, okay?

I've got 1400 round-trip miles to catch the Tigs this season. I'd be a Detroit fan if they lost 162 games in a year (which they just might next year).

I wish the Tigs had gotten the Cubs in the 1984 World Series. No offense to the Padres, but Detroit played Chicago in 1945 (and won) and it would've been a cool regional matchup.
Here's hoping for a Cubs/Red Sox World Series.

7. Seasons like this one make you realize why baseball is fun.

Don't you think that a day at the park is WAAAAY better than most anything you can do with your clothing still on--even if your team doesn't win? I always walk away feeling like I've been entertained and looking at the world the same way they did when the Gashouse Gang ran rampant... Maybe all the beer and hot dawgs helps with that vision, I dunno.

You've heard me say it time after time--"We Cubs fans are only happy in the off season!" (This year has been the exception, I guess.)

8. As bad (horribly bad) as this season has been

Last night was the most exciting game I've seen live at Detroit since Frank Tanana shut out the Toronto Blue Jays 1-0 to win the AL East title in 1987 (on my birthday, October 4, to boot).
Mike B and I were commenting on how we were about to get skunked on the whole season (he 0-6, me 0-7) when the fireworks started in the seventh and continued through the eighth and ninth.
As I said, it was the biggest comeback victory for the Tigs in 38 years. Absolutely unforgettable -- plus, the kids have something positive to take home with them for the off-season. Also, the Tigs have won four of their last five -- no small accomplishment considering that they already had 118 losses when the "streak" started. Detroit is the youngest team in MLB -- our number two starter, Jeremy Bonderman, is 20 years old and, by rights, should be pitching in AA ball.
Win or lose -- it's still Tiger baseball. You, as a Cubs fan, should be able to relate to that.
