40 Years Ago Today - Soupy Sales Got in TROUBLE!!!!!!

January 1, 1965. Soupy Sales was doing his show on WNEW-TV in New York, and I was watching it. I can remember it as if it was yesterday.

In the middle of his show, Souopy looked straight into the camera and said the following:

"Hey, kids - You father's probably asleep on the couch after watching all the footballs games, so go into his wallet and get out those little green pieces of paper with Washington and Lincoln's pictures on them. You send those pieces of paper in to me, and I'll send you a picture post card from Buenos Aires!"

A few days later, he showed some money that he claimed kids had sent in, and a postcard with a dime taped to it and a message that read "Dear Soupy - This is all my old man had."

The station suspended Soupy's show. But after hundreds of college students picketed their studios, they brought Soupy back the following week.

As Soupy himself explained in his autobiography, none of this was anything he could have gotten away with on television in the mid-1960s and still have remained on the air:

. . . about those myths. There were all these other things I was supposed to have said, like "What begins with 'F' and ends with 'UCK' . . . a firetruck," or, "I took my wife to the ball game and kissed her on the strikes and she kissed me on the balls," or, "My wife is a great cook, she makes great pies -- I eat her cherry and she eats my banana." And people would swear that I said it! Now, you know that in those days you couldn't say nuthin' .

I got so annoyed at these stories that I used to have a standing offer of ten thousand dollars cash to anyone who could prove that I said any of the things that people claim I've said. Look, at every TV station, whether you know it or not, there's a little spool in the master machine in engineering that records everything that's said, everything that goes on. And believe me, if I said half the things I'm supposed to have said, they would be on some blooper record making the rounds.

I remember that one. Practically my entire 9th grade class worshipped Soupy.

Anyone remember Soupy's spinoff starting Detective Philo Kvetch? and his evil nemesis -- The Mask (Nee hee hee hee hee) and evil sidekick Onions Oregano? It was filmed in the NJ dockyards and Palisades Amusement Park, among other locations.

6. I Remember Philo Kvetch!!!!

A few years after Soupy went off the air, I was the Music Director at my high school radio station - WJSV-FM in Morristown, NJ. I was going through a group of records that had been donated to us and found one that had a collection of overtures and musical interludes on it. I put it on the turntable, and the first one was the "Phhilo Kvetch" theme.

my dad told me that a children's host, thinking the show was over, remarked, "Well, that ought to satisfy the little sons of bitches for today."

Needless to say, that ended his career on kids' TV!

13. There is always the one about the naked lady

And the TV camera (turned off) prank that was pulled on him. As I recall he was making an exit or answering a door in a skit and behind it was a naked woman. The TV producers were in on it and had set up a fake camera so Soupy thought it was being filmed directly. Rather, what went out were the side shots showing just his reaction.
