How many pets do you have?

When we moved to Maryland in 2001 we had two cats, Harry & Richard. They moved from California with me in 2000.

We begin 2005 with 15 cats (gawd, that number sounds frightening): six indoor, seven outdoor, and two indoor foster kittens.

We have the space and the means with which to care for these pets. We're not crazy cat ladies. We just have a hard time saying "no."

The ferals are rather heartbreaking, especially the ones that just won't be trapped. But we feed them because we adore them. And we perform TNR because it's irresponsible for us not to do so. We don't want our feral colony to grow (to the extent that we can prevent it).

It's stressful for me to handle all this that I've taken on. I don't know if it's stressful for Mrs. V., but she's gone along w/ me at every step. She's a wonderful woman and I'm eternally grateful that she's mine.

But I've had vast amounts of pets in the past! At one point, I had 4 dogs, 11 cats and a rabbit. Another period in my life, I had 5 dogs, a cat, a horse, about 150 pheasant, some chickens, some geese and a goat.

It's kind of quiet around here now but I like it.

But since they've only become semi-socialized, I haven't grown attached. I don't know if we will be able to find them homes, since they won't allow us to pick them up and only let me pet them under very specific and safe circumstances. I'm afraid we'll have to have them altered & let them be part of our feral colony.

Only one of the outside mob is feral-- most are simply semi-neglected neighborhood cats who've learned that my backyard is a safe place where handouts and affection are available.

20. 3 cats, one parakeet, about 15 finches

I was running a home for unwed pregnant cats for a while though. We had Delilah, a fourteen year old Siamese. She was having trouble keeping down food, so we were having to try different types to see what worked. My husband started feeding this cat outside the extra food. She told all of her friends (relatives?), and the next thing you know, we were a kitty soup kitchen. We were feeding three, all of them female - Socks, Tiger, and Skittish. Socks and Tiger demanded lovings, Skittish was, well, skittish.

Socks became obviously pregnant, so she became Mama Socks. She delivered in the insulation under the trailer...From this, we acquired Dora (because she explored), Tubby (she was actually bloated), and Bear (this cat is HUGE!). Babies had goopy eyes, stuffy noses, they were filthy (they'd been born in insulation, Mama Socks couldn't clean them). We lost two, one was named Lucky, the other one never even got a name. Mama Socks had to be shown how to feed them, I'd lay her down and pet her with one hand, while attaching babies with the other. She got it in the long run, and was a preety good girl. She even brought me dead mice. Ewww...thanks.

Just as Mama Sock's babies were weened, Tiger and Skittish got that bloated look. Come on girls, don't you learn? My husband scooped up Tiger Mama and she hung out in the master bathroom/bedroom until she delivered. (He didn't want the babies to be born in insulation again.) Six beautiful babies were born in a towel lined box in my bathtub. Skittish (feral) brought me two babies, one with a dislocated leg, the other was blind. If she had more, she didn't share.

I figure that Tiger Mama is Mama Socks and Skittish's mom, just from the interactions of the three of them.

We kept Tubby, Dora, and Bear. We lost Delilah to intestinal cancer. We found homes for the kittens that we could, the others went to organizations that would find them homes, not put them down. We donated financially what we could, and often took kitten food with the kittens.

Bear had an appointment to get fixed, but he knocked up both of his sisters before appointment day. Tubby delivered six, four days later, Dora delivered 5. Dora kept stealing Tubby's babies, and Tubby didn't seem to mind. Dora was always the little mama, and she was good at this stuff. So, all of the kittens went in together, and whichever mama was up to it would feed. This went very well until one of Tubby's babies died. She apparently blamed Dora, and began trying to kill her. When those kittens went, Tubby went with them, and we kept Scribbles, child of Dora, looks just like Mama Socks.

Dora likes to go outside, and my husband let her out while in heat, so she had one more litter of six, all but the runt made it.

Dora, Bear, and Scribbles are all fixed now, and we moved away from where Mama Socks, Tiger Mama, and Skittish are (but a neighbor promised to feed them well).

We had two parakeets, Pretty by and Girly Bird. Pretty Boy was awesome, not a biter, hand trained. Girly Bird thinks she's a pit bull. We lost Pretty Boy in August, the same day I lost my job.

The finches have a huge cage with six nest boxes. Forget breed like bunnies...Breed like zebra finches! There are about 15 of them now, my husband's hobbies.

Angel and her pups Larry & Curly-I had her fixed two months later. She came to my home pregnant and gave birth two weeks after arrival.


This is one of the two cats- they are twin littermates that somebody dumped at the side of the road. I call them kitty and other kitty.

I'm thinking about adopting this guy:


He's a three year old Turkish Angora in Indiana. Right now he's living in a cattery and has almost no daily interaction with people, which is really sad. Turks are very outgoing and people oriented, so I see putting one in a cage and only petting him once or twice a day as rather abusive.The problem is 1.) how to get him to Florida, and 2.) how will my other cats react to him? My Puck is also a purebred turk, and it would be nice for her to have a playmate with the same energy level that she has, but Oberon and Miro are rather "tenderhearted" cats, and get intimidated and upset fairly easily. I also don't know if four indoor cats in a 1600 sq. ft. home is a bit much. Suggestions, anyone?

Polly and Cassie are 2 of a litter of five that were born in my basement. Mommy and the other 3 kittens are in the homes of my friends so we have family reunions eveyr now and then.
I have a handsome German Shepherd named Boen who is loved by Cassie. From day one, she let him know who was boss, and it has been that way. Cassie and Boen sleep on the bed with me.

At home we have 2 dogs, one cat, one ferret and a mouse. At the bookstore, we have an inherited pussycat to whom I have become oddly attached. I was never a big cat person--- didn't DISlike them, but didn't much care for them, either--- but both Sid and Merlin have wormed their ways into heart, almost without me realizing it.

Magic, 5 year old cocker spaniel rescued from the SPCA. He's going prematurely gray like his owner. Actually, he has white fur from his mouth running all the way down his chest. This seems to be his new favorite night-time sleeping place...



Nightmare, 14 year old black cat. Came to my doorstep when she was about 7 months old and pregnant, have had her ever since. She's had a lot of health problems this past year, but is doing really well now.



Smoke, 13 year old gray cat, Nightmare's son. He's about 12 pounds of mostly fur. Very regal looking and a total love-muffin to everyone who comes into the house.

Sonny the dog, a big mixed breed, who patrols the outside, and Angel the cat, who handles mouse duty indoors.

In reality, we also have Gus, a cow dog from a neighbor's place about a mile away. He showed up shortly after we bought our place and refuses to leave. The neighbors finally gave up on keeping him home (he broke several chains) and bought two new pups for cow duty. Now the pups keep showing up here.

Then there are the feral cats, 10 of them by last count. I think they came from a mama who belongs to another neighbor.

Lastly, two guinea hens who showed up a few months ago. Sometimes they get up on the roof and run from one end of the house to the other. It's a strange sound, kinda like little tiny ghosts running a foot race.

43. Yes, they're on & around our property.

We keep the garage side door ajar during the winter. It's still cold, but at least they're out of the elements.

Trust me, judging from the ones we've trapped & returned... they're not scarred, Barb. In fact, our most recent success, Tortie, is less afraid of me now than she was before we trapped her. She'll come to within a foot of me when I'm feeding her.

I don't think the traps harm them emotionally. I think they are probably afraid while they're trapped, of course, but I don't think cats have very long memories.

Ear Tipping: when a feral cat is spayed/neutered, the vet, using a laser, takes about 1 mm off the tip of the cat's left ear. It's a signal to those in the know that this cat is altered and so can't reproduce, and is a member of a cared-for feral community.

As for those "in the know" -- it's up to us who have feral colonies to educate our communities. I don't know how to do this other than going door to door. :shrug:

8 cats: 1 Himalayan (Pandora), 5 ferals - all tamed and neutered (Huey P. Newton, his brother Ditto, Charlie, Gracie Allen and Voodoo), and two 8 month old kittens I adopted last June. Only 3 live in the house. The ferals live in a fabulous Florida room and have house privilages.

2 dogs: Frauke and St. Ignatious - mother and son. Purebred English style Yellow Labs.

Many fish. Many, many, many fish. I have a 75 gallon aquarium that's thriving with Live Bearers of many types. And then there's the pond. It's a spring-fed natural pond, about 1/4 acre and of unknown depth. 12 years ago I tossed in 4 Koi and 8 Goldfish. Now there are thousands and thousands of fish in it. When I feed them in the evening it looks like you could walk on them, they're so thick. The water boils golds and oranges.

About 18 bird feeders of various types, not including the Hummingbird feeders. When the Hummers are around, I have 4 quart sized feeders that half to be filled on a daily basis during their breeding and nesting season.

"House privileges:" how do they get in & out? How do they & your house cats get along? And what's a Florida room? Thanks!

I'm trying to figure out how to help our indoor cats live in better harmony. Mrs. V. won't go for a cat door that all can use because some of our kids we just don't want to let out at all. I've thought about the kind of door w/ a magnetic control. That's as far as I've gotten -- barring building some kind of outdoor enclosure onto the house to which they'd all have access, and we can't afford that.

A Florida room is an attached solarium kind of thing. It's glassed in and in the Summer the glass is raised with the screens keeping critters out and kittens in. By "house privilages" I mean that they get to come in for a long romp in the evening and play lap-cat, laser tag, belly-up-to-the-catnip-bar, whatever suits their fancy. My house cats are just shut off in other rooms; I have a large, sprawling house that makes it easy. Since none of my cats are declawed I really can't have 8 cats shredding everything in sight - so the ferals are monitored. To make things worse, I collect Persian flatweaves - kelims, soumaks and the like. Perfect for sharpening claws, so I have to be careful. But I would never, ever have a cat declawed.

been thinking of digging a pond but I have raccoons and oppossums that I feed and I can just see them going in the pond and washing their food, killing the fish, etc. That's a huge pond; mine would be just a few square feet.

My cats never bother with the fish; they're too preoccupied with mice and voles around the edges. Oppossums just go after crayfish and such. But, Racoons will wipe a small, man made pond out in no time.

I've had great good luck TNR'ing the females, but the males won't go near the trap. They just KNOW it's bad news for them. :-) I keep trying; they keep avoiding it.

None of them seems scarred by the trap. I do feel guilty when I have to leave them in there until their appts. (always the next day), since I can't explain what a great favor I'm doing them. But they never run away and seem to like me better afterwards.

Oh, for Christmas, a friend gave me -- I am not making this up -- a "Crazy Cat Lady" action figure. The "lady" comes complete with a ratty robe, and 6 cat figures. I decided to interpret the gift as a compliment on my kind nature!

Found him at work two years ago, he was already neutered and declawed, in fairly good shape but underweight at the time (we fixed that). Vet guesses he has some Coon-cat or ragdoll in him which accounts for his size.

When we moved from Chicago to Phoenix, we had 3 cats. That trip was interesting and one we'll never forget. One of the cats that made the move with us died in March of 2003. We added 5 to our brood since moving here - 4 of which are the result of me volunteering at a cat shelter. We added the Russian tortoises over the summer.

I'll never have 7 cats again. Things were much more manageable around here with 3 or 4. Now there is fur everywhere, and not a day goes by without one of them barfing somewhere.

60. Actually, I have learned that the cats consider me the pet...

I am owned by three cats , who have graciously consented to allow me to clean their litter box, feed them, and act as a stand-in for a scratching post. My benefactors are as follows:

DC (stand for Daddy Cat-I didn't name him) 24 human years old and still going strong. He is a grey, white, and orange bellied Tabby.
Tootsie (short for Tootsie Roll, because of her seal tip coloration-she is also a snowshoe, with gorgeous little snow white booties). 5 and a half years old.
Pooky- 3 and a half years old. Korat, and as captivating as the Korat websites all say is characteristic of the breed.

All of them were either abandoned or abused and rescued. I don't know how I would have survived emotionally for the past two years without them.

3 crazy dogs, rat terriers. 2 are sisters who were nearly feral when i got them. they are coming around, after 2 years.
one extremely sweet and good timneh african grey parrot.
one flock of roughly 50 parakeets.
2 fish tanks, one fresh water, one salt.
if and when i finally get the nut sisters to be good dogs, i will get another boxer. they are good little kids, in their way, but i feel naked without a big dog around the house.

63. Two dogs

One was intentional (Emma). We've had her for three years. The other (Maude) just showed up and refused to leave a few weeks ago. But she loves us all and we love her so she's staying.

However, she has a huge half black lab/ half rottweiler and two cats. All males, the cats are orange. one long haired, one short. Currently, I have had longer and more meaningful conversations with the cats....

I keep a brick on the frog's terrarium so the cats don't get him.

I also help feed a feral colony of 12 cats in our neighborhood.

We used to have a big dog but she died a couple of years ago.

Spooky - a female black cat, age 14
Tiger - a male gray cat, age 13
Sting - a female lilac point Siamese shelter cat, age about 4

I don't know what I'd do without them.

and I have to use a lot of willpower to leave PetSmart on the weekends without adopting another little kitten brought in by the local Humane Society. I have enough room for the 8 I have, but my house is full now.

The most 'cute while obnoxious' of the 8 is the guinea pig. He's like R2D2: round body, no facial expressions, and he yells using very loud and annoying whistles.
He's good friends with one of the rabbits, and they share a big cage.

I have a beautiful brindle amstaff named Princess Daizie, who has no clue she's a pit bull, and four cats, Phil, Chuck, Cocoa, and Fluffy (the mom, who was dumped in our neighborhood and had her babies in our garage). We finally figured out these cats are ours and they are now free to come go into our garage through a kitty door but are outside cats due to my hubby's severe asthma (he refuses to get allergy shots, dang it), and Cocoa has managed thus far to avoid the dreaded snip, so he has a bit of the wanderlust.

We lost our 14-year-old bull mastiff Trixie last May and are still in mourning.

2 Bouviers, 1 Briard/Bearded Collie Mix, 1 pug mix. One bouv and the briard cross are 12, one bouv is 7 and the pug mix is about 8.

Four cats are 14 (brothers), 2 are diabetic; 1 is almost 19 and one is somewhere between 12 and 15, we aren't sure.
