Does anyone else here like the Disney cartoon musicals?

I was babysitting my niece and nephew this week and watched some of them. I've always loved them. The Little Mermaid is my favorite, but like Beauty and the Best, Mulan, Aladdin too. OK, since this is anonymous on the Internet, I'll go a step further. We watched the Barbie movie Princess and the Pauper, which is also a musical. I can't believe I'm saying it, but I loved the movie. Barbie plagiarizes a story, throw in some songs, and boom.. you have the movie. I love my cheesy kiddie musicals.

I sing with my niece and nephew. OK, so I am a singer, and love to show off at any chance, but I love to sing with them and act out the scenes. I don't know who enjoys it more, me or them. Well, yes I do, and its me, but they like it too. :P

9. I try, but I sing off-key and my grandaughters have beautiful voices

for their ages. 5 and 8. Their other grandmother sings in a gospel quartet and has a beautiful voice. All they inherited from me was my smart mouth.

James Woods is terrific as Hades.

When Hercules and Aladdin teamed up, it was great.

Someone once said there are only seven major story plots out there, the rest is just decoration.

Most of the Disney stories are based on popular fairy tales, myths or other stories already well known, thus assuring instant popularity for the movie.

15. I think they had three good movies there

with Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and the Lion King. The Little Mermaid was OK, though I think the other three were better. I didn't really see any of the tradionally animated Disney movies after the Lion King though.

Since I really like film scores, I went back and listened to a few tracks from the Lion King soundtrack which my sister got years ago. I was impressed, but then again I like Hans Zimmer's scores and sure enough he did a great job on that one.

Although I'm not as big a fan of Snow White as I am of the others I mentioned, it is really beautifully animated.

Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast (and interned on The Little Mermaid), I guess I should, but I'd probably enjoy them much more if I'd never been employed as an animator, lol!

Growing up, I loved Lady and the Tramp, Bambi, The Jungle book and 101 Dalmatians.

Personally, I like Pheobus in "the hunchback of notre Dame"; the film sucked (and no, I didn't work on it, thank God!) but it was nice to see a mature male hero for a change.

26. I wish the industry felt the same way

a lot of us who worked on that film had been been in animation less than five years, and it shows in places. It was a Howard Ashman/ Alan Menken film though (Aladdin was the last one; Howard died of AIDS soon afterwards), so the story held up well IMHO.

We missed the Academy Award for Best Picture on that one by 30 votes! "Silence of the lambs" won instead. :-(

29. Wow, I am so impressed that you worked on that film.

My entertainment center is devoted to movies I like. I have a stuffed velociraptor and a bullwhip on top of the entertainment center to represent Jurassic Park and Raiders of the Lost Ark, respectively. (Yeah, I like adventure films...sue me!) To represent Beauty and the Beast, I have a small Beast figurine.

That movie moved me: tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme. The theme is very close to that of Phantom of the Opera, another story I love. It's the story of love in despair, unrequited love and in the case of the Beast, love fulfilled. It's beautiful and resonates with many.

After Howard Ashman died, the quality of Disney musicals suffered tremendously in my opinion. Up through Aladdin, I waited impatiently for summer and the next Disney musical. Really. I anticipated them heavily.

I miss that sense of anticipation. :( Such beautiful work.

Beauty and the Beast was the best of them and I think the industry did acknowledge that when they nominated it for the Best Picture Academy Award and again just recently when it was revamped for Imax. I missed the Imax showing. I live too far away from Imax theaters...bummer! But I was aware that it was showing. I very much wanted the DVD special edition, but I couldn't afford it. I'm stuck with the old VHS, which I love with all my heart.

Again, I'm so impressed that you worked on that film. Those of us who aren't animators can't tell that it "suffered in places" like you claim. What exactly did you do on the film?

The dance in the ballroom...wow! What a beautiful scene. I remember Siskel and Ebert reviewing the film. They loved it, especially that part. The Beast was so nervous and yet so much in love. When you looked deep into his eyes you could see the sadness there and you hoped with all your heart that Belle would fall in love with him. Siskel and Ebert said Beauty and the Beast was worthy of Best Picture. :) I agree.

32. Mostly due to the good folks in the CG department

and backgrounds, which added the painted texture maps. James Baxter's animation of Belle and the Beast in that sequence was also pretty brilliant (it's VERY had to keep animation from "sliding" on a moving background like that. I worked on a Roger Rabbit film and had a hell of a time with that).

I had a role on the lead character, Belle (I'll PM you with more; my name is early in the credits, and I still kinda want to remain anonymous on this board). I also did some design work on the Beast. You can see one of my designs for him in the portfolio section of the special edition (the Beast preliminary designs). Mine is the wolf/ bison looking one; very dark and broody, with orange eyes and a slightly torn 16th century sleeve.

I didn't see the Imax version either, though I heard that they put the scraped song "human again" back in the picture; there's a reason we scraped it in the first place, y'know! (One problem; it's like that "small world" song; you can't remove it from your brain once it's there!)The thought of seeing my seven inch high drawings blown up to a few stories? :scared:

Yeah, pretty much the entire defunct feature animation studio would agree with you about Ashman. He didn't just contribute to the songs, he helped construct the stories. Without a great script, you have NOTHING! Alan couldn't handle the job on his own, and Phil (Collins) gets damned tiresome. I think Elton John did a good job, better than any of us expected (and Hans Zimmer is pretty brilliant). "Kimba, King of the Jungle", which was later titled "The Lion King" was a total train wreck for several years. The directors were hopeless, and everyone HATED working on that movie (I quit during that film, in fact). Somehow, it was made and turned out pretty well in spite of it all. How that happened is still a mystery!
