Cat experts... need advice

this is my first post, so please forgive me if I do it wrong. Anyway, I am a first time cat owner and about 3 weeks ago, my cat started acting funny. Rolling around, purring/meowing funny constantly and rubbing up against everything. I took her to the vet and they told me she was fixed but suspected part of her ovary may remain and she is in heat. Do you agree with this? And, how long will it last? I'm getting worried about her.

1. Sure sounds like heat to me.

They turn into crazed little sluts, and it can go on for a week or two at least. For her sake and yours, you need to get that other ovary out of there.

they spay humane society kittens very young and said that they have seen that when they are spayed so young, sometimes there is an ovary left, but the tubes are gone and they cannot get pregnant.

to find out if there is part of an ovary left. She's on my lap now, starting to settle down.

i think we'll be able to get the surgery for her. My b/f tries to act all hard, but NY Eve we were talking to someone who had spend $800 on their dog at the vet after it was hit by a car and (after a few cocktails of course) he admitted that if need be he would spend that on kitty.

I'm not trying to scare you, just be very sure that a remaining ovary is the problem. You wouldn't want to spend the money and have your poor kitty go through surgery for nothing. Good luck! And give a kiss to your bf for being so nice...when men care for their gf's cats, it's true love.

2. It certainly sounds like she's in heat

If this is the case, it will happen often. My females seemed to be in heat more than they weren't (until I got them fixed).

I've never had any kitties that weren't fixed but I don't think that "being in heat" would last that long. (Would it?)

It does *sound* like she's in heat, though, is she unusually frisky-acting? Otherwise OK, any other changes recently? What breed is she?

7. she started about 3 weeks ago

then seemed to be fine after I took her to the vet and she got her first set of shots. She's been doing it again for the past 2 days. Her friskiness doesn't seem to be different. As far as breed, I don't know a lot about cats - she is a tiger striped kitty - very cute.

5. Is there a reason you doubt the vet's diagnosis?

Did you get her from a shelter? If so, they generally spay the cat before allowing you to take her home. Did they do that? If so, I would suggest you call the shelter and tell them what your vet said. The shelter would probably want the spaying vet to have a look at her.

11. actually, i got her from my neighbor

she came over to my house, opened the storm door (as a little kitten) and meowed til I let her in. When they came back from vacation, i gave her back, but a couple of months later he asked if I wanted her b/c he had adopted 5 and didn't want all of them any longer. I called the vet he took her to, but i guess it's a local thing, she doesn't like my neighbor and wouldn't see her when i called the first time.

6. Does she seem to be in any pain?

If not, then I wouldn't worry too much. The vet can perhaps give her a shot to stop the situation, at least temporarily, if heat is the problem, but perhaps she may need that other overy out. Do a google on cat in heat and you should be able to come up with some good advice. In normal situations, if they don't mate, it keeps a happening, and some of them can yowl like mad for a couple of weeks at a time (gets a bit irritating, especially if you have a cat with an incredibly plaintive wail).

I had a cat that I could not get to the vet due to living in an isolated area with one vet and a huge backlog, and that poor girl spent one cycle spending every night in my car (she was waking the neighbors, it sounded as though she was being tortured). I'd go down to the lot in the morning, and there would be ten or twelve horny mails plastered to the windscreen, hoping against hope....

but after reading the posts and links, i think you are all right and it is heat possibly b/c of an ovary left as the vet said. Thanks for the info.

i haven't noticed her spraying, but she does seem to be engaging in weird postures. Makes a little more sense.

13. I had a similar situation

Years ago, our kitty Missy was a shelter rescue. Back then, they didn't always spay/neuter them so we had no idea whether she was or not.

She actually would back into things and rub against them. When it got to the point she was umm..how do I say this..setting her sights on Hubby..we took her to have her spayed.

The Vet called in the middle of the surgery, saying that Missy had already been spayed but they would continue to look for a piece of ovary. They didn't find any. Funny though, that behavior improved after that.

Although..she did have some other issues. I always thought it was the kids taking pens and pencils out of the pen cup until I found her at the top of the steps with them neatly laying in a line, like kittens, with her talking to them and treating them like kittens.

weird tho - she seems not to want much to do w/ my b/f at all. That's weird about your kitty putting the pens & pencils in a line. They seem too human sometimes. I had a headache (New Year's Day) and my kitty put her paws right on my temple and seemed to make it feel better.

how long it was before she drove my Hubby crazy. Her behavior seemed to progress once it started. I know it was a few months after we got her when she began to behave like she was in heat and a while after that before we took her to be spayed. The vet was shocked to find she had already been spayed and really thought she'd find a piece of ovary.

It's been years ago, Missy passed away in 94. She was a dear girl and sure loved her pens and pencils.

Maybe with your kitty being spayed so young, they did miss an ovary or part of it. I wonder if they could do an ultrasound to verify if the ovary is there or not. I'm thinking the ultrasound might be more expensive than the surgery, but it might save your kitty from having a surgery if she doesn't need it.

after your post i guess i did seem kinda silly. my b/f has been laughing at me for hours. oh well, I've seen several cat threads and was pretty sure i could get some good advice.
