been knighted by the Queen, has had 'one hell of a wonderful life' with all the pain and pleasure that life brings. I'd venture to guess that he tries to maintain 'balance' - but I would LIKE to think that he is for the 'greater good of mankind'. Working to that end manifests itself in many ways. Remember, not everyone is working to that end of the 'greater good. Just my 2 cents.

he is definitely not a Republican. There is virtually no equivalent in other countries for being a Republican. Democrats would be the conservative party in many nations.

The conservative party (Tories) in Britain is the same as the Republicans in the US and the Liberals in Australia. Tony Blair's Labour Party (Britain) is the same as the Democratic Party in the US and the Labour Party in Australia.

You can say if a party is left or right in the spectrum of the political climate of that country but you can't equate them to parties in America.

I would venture to say a large portion of people in Canada who are "Conservative" would be Democrats in the States. The same could be said for many European countries.

There are 5 parties with significant preesence in the UK (obviously some bigger than others)
Labour
Tories
Lib Dems
Greens and the Socialists

This list is in descending order of popularity
I actually think that The Greens and Socialists actually have a decent number of seats in the Scottish Parliament.


Anyway, the Democrats and the Labour party are very similar in the spectrum of L to C. However, the Labour Party started out as essentially a communist party. I did some research in their archives at one point and many of their documents refer to each other as comrade... they love marx, and they sing the "red flag" at their conventions (edit: I actually witnessed them singing this at one of their conventions, it is an ongoing tradition)...
oh and my favorite.. they signed letters "Fraternally yours,"

They were BIG into labour. Now the labour title is just that a title.

However, they did roughly follow the same changes in ideologies as the Democrats


Now, the comparison of the country's parties end there.

In the UK, the Conservatives (tories) really dont make huge rows about social issues.
Their big things are taxes and government spending.. which they cant shut up about.

The Lib Dems which started out as a centrist party between the Tories and the Labour Party is now further left of Labour - and gathering energy.

Many higher ups in the Labour party see the Lib Dems as the next big opposition party in the coming years. (not this next election)

I don't know ANY liberals in Australia who identify with the Republican party. The Republicans are much more right wing than the Liberals and even many Tories.

and seemed to be quite fond of Clinton too.

Unlike Lennon, who was very vocal in his political beliefs later in life, McCartney doesn't seem to speak much about it. So we can only judge him by his music. But his music indicates a 60s peace and love liberal.
