Standoff At Bar Ends When Drunk Gunman Passes Out

GOWANDA, N.Y. -- An armed standoff at a western New York restaurant ended when a man accused of shooting at a police officer passed out after getting drunk.

The incident began Monday afternoon when a man brought a shotgun into the bar at the Palm Gardens restaurant in Gowanda, south of Buffalo.

Authorities say the man fired once at an officer who arrived at the scene, then took a female bartender hostage.

Sheriff's department and state police SWAT teams blocked off the area.

The bartender managed to escape nearly four hours into the standoff, and police took the suspect into custody soon after. Authorities say he passed out because he was drunk.
