Instead of using the hyper-priced carpet specific 'cleaners' which clearly do far more harm than good, use Mr. Clean or something comparable to that. A general household cleaner.
Of course run a test patch, but I've never encountered a problem, even when cleaning nice wool rugs.
I found the allegedly carpet specific 'shampoos' tend to leave massive grease trails that stain the carpets far worse than anything else, and they even seem to attract more dirt for some reason.
I like the fragrance of the Mr. Clean stuff, it seriously eliminates pet odors, cigarette odors, etc. The house smells so clean and nice after! Use the same amount as directed by the device you're buying.
Just try it once, and compare for yourself. You won't damage your carpet and will save yourself LOTS of money in the long run over not buying the 'carpet' shampoos and 'stain removers'. They don't WORK.
BYW, I got the tip from a gal working in our local hardware store that rents the massive carpet cleaners. She has been using this method on her white carpets for years. I followed suit on my off white carpets that my doggie had peed on. I've been enjoying the results for the past 5 years.
Enjoy!
