9. Well, not always

After buying several used cars that were allegedly in great condition--every single one of them turned out to be maintenance dogs--I bought a brand-new Honda Civic with 3 miles on it (they'd just gotten a new shipment in). That was 6 years ago, and I'm still driving it, and plan to be driving it for many years to come.

I've never had a moment's trouble with it, it's a blast to drive AND fuel-efficient, and I've had zero regrets.

4. I'm over 30

and have bought more than one new car. But there was a time when I was over 30 and had never bought a new car.

Since I helped my older son buy a used car a couple of years ago, I would seriously consider my next car being a late-model, low-mileage vehicle. But since I tend to keep a car 5 years or more (and I'm sure lots of DUers keep their cars much longer and pile on more miles than I do) and my current car is only four years old, it will be a while before I'm in the market again.

5. Have bought exactly two new cars in my life.

in 1989 I bought an '88 Mazda 323 (oh, I loved my hatchback!) for $8800; in 1994 I bought a '95 Saturn SC1 for $14,000 -- I'm still driving it today.

8. I did buy used until I started a stable full time job....got tired of...

getting screwed by the old roll back scheme. Seriously I've even bought new and got myself a lemon. Since 1985 I've bought nothing new except GMC's and only had 2 problems that were fixed. I do not believe in dealer service its a rip off, unless its warrenty work. I too as I've gotten older tend to keep my vehicles longer, I'm not racking up a lot of miles lately since I do have 3 older vehicles 1973's that I drive during the summer. My present new vehicle is 5yrs old and has 24k on it. Lots of people want it but for now I'm satisfied. A local small hardware business I've dealt with for 30+ yrs gets first crack at it. He still has my 1995 GMC.

Today there are many fine new cars for under 16k that get decent mpg and have a bit more room than a shoebox. The key to any car is regular service 3-6k miles, most will go over 100k not like old ones.

10. In 1983 I bought a brand new Ford Escort.

Drove 5 miles north from the Dealer's lot and a young lady backed out of her driveway into the passenger side door!

I was SO upset, not because of the new car so much but because I had my 8 week old son in his baby bucket ( The GM kind that was so popular back then and ok to have in the front seat cuz we didn't have air bags) in the front passenger side seat. NO one was hurt, but geez ... it was an experience.

11. The Princess's 1993 Plymoth Sundance

Like the one in the picture - a black two-door hatchback. Other than a few tuneups, new front disk pads, new tires, and a tranny rebuild at 103,000 miles, it's been virtually trouble-free. 107,000 miles and still runs great.

Unfortunately, they don't make Plymouths any more.....

12. I checked under thirty bought more than one

Because when I was under 30 I bought 2 new cars. Then I learned about depreciation, and that I could get a MUCH BETTER car with very little mileage that was still covered under warranty. It took me a while to make up for depreciation, but my last purchase this past March was a 2002 Ford Mustang GT Loaded with 9400 miles on it for 16,000. That was about 2500 dollars less than dealers wanted for a mustang with more miles. I bought from a private seller who kept it in cherry condition.

I was looking for a couple of months, and the dealers wanted to give me bupkes for my trade. I went to Car-Max to get an appraisal, which was about 800 dollars more than any of the other dealers was offering. I ended up selling it to my supervisor's daughter.

It took me a while to realize that most car dealers are full of crap, but I picked up the game now. Now I think it is fun messing with them.

I have never regretted it. Still have it, still love it.

15. I'm 44 and just bought my first new car

It's just a little cheap thing with no extras - $9995. I had a pretty decent car but it had high mileage. I wasn't planning to switch but a friend who works at a dealership got me financed. The main reason I bought it was to boost my credit since my ex destroyed it when we were married. I've been carefully rebuilding it ever since. The car was the logical next step.
