Anybody else hate the movie "Chicago?"

I tried to watch it this weekend and had to quit after about 15 minutes. (and the critics loved it!?!?) I just couldn't stand the singing. I just hate that kind of movie. I also hated "All That Jazz" by Bob Fosse. Is it just me or are there others who hated "Chicago?"

I think I liked two or three songs in the entire movie. The rest of it bored me silly.

A dance number centered on a coronary bypass with Ben Vereen as a singing heart????

3. "It sucked" comes to mind

I had a hard time watching it. I kept waiting for it to get better. Never happened.

I thought it was simlpy brilliant. I bought the DVD. But I absolutely love musicals, my favorite is Carmen Jones.

If you already knew you didn't like "All That Jazz" why in the world did you go ahead and "try" to watch it?

For those of us who loved it, the irony, the camp, the tongue-in-cheek, the music and performances were outstanding.

Different strokes for different folks.

Give it another "try" and watch it from the perspective of not sitting back and being spoon fed a wiz-bang-car-chase-jiggling-hip hop made for TV 30 minute wrap up story line.....to listening to the lyrics and working to understand the characters. You might discover another brand of entertainment.

Absolutely! The Cell Block Tango is one of the best dance numbers ever. How often do you get to see women being bad as they wanna be?

Chicago the story has been around for a while. It started life as a satirical play written in the 1920s. The author was a newspaperwoman who logged time at some of these trials.

And we do not make heroes out of criminals, so stop saying that!

13. It was supposed to be an evening

watching a movie with the family. I ended up doing the dishes instead. I tend not to like the big Hollywood movies and prefer foreign flicks. In my opinion, Hollywood puts out about 2 or 3 decent movies a year.

31. Haven't Seen it Yet

As stupid as it sounds, I've been putting off watching Chicago out of petty resentment for the fact that none of its big awards winners had the grace to thank Baz Luhrman for making Moulin Rouge. If not for that movie's success, Chicago would still be waiting for a green light, in all likelihood.

just aren't for everyone. I wouldn't be surprised if your favorite movies are ones I hate, and vice versa.

8. My favorite movies are ones

that are well written, well acted and produced. Among my favorites are "Jackie Brown" "Pulp Fiction" "The Shawshank Redemption" "The Whale Rider" "Bowling for Colombine" "Legally Blond".....following musicals take patience and an enjoyment for the musical theater experience.

Say what you will about Katherine Zeta Jones, she can sing and dance in the classic sense which takes disapline and talent, which is more than can be said about the latest Britany flavor of the month.

9. It was a commentary on today's society and our political/judicial system

Movies that are bigger than movies, that have something more to say, that cause us to think, reflect, ask questions, et al, generally get Oscar recognition. Chicago tried to do this, perhaps not as well as others in the past, but 2003 didn't have much to offer in this category. Judging by a reader-response standard, it was a mediocre movie; the songs weren't inspiring (and any musical that gets Best Picture should have a soundtrack that sells-Chicago didn't) and the acting was just above average.

The Pianist and Gangs of New York were much better films, much more entertaining, and deserved the Oscar in my opinion. As for The Hours, I have no idea what Academy voters were thinking.

The movies I can not stand are those which highlight Schwarzenegger, Stallone and Bruce Willis....

I liked "Sound of Music" and some of the other classics from my youth. Maybe I just don't like modern musicals--especially ones that are turned into movies.

I generally like musicals but absolutely hated "The Sound of Music" and adore "Chicago". I rented it and watched it four or five times before returning it and then ran out and bought the DVD and the soundtrack.

Any DUer would love the number where all of the reporters are marionettes whose strings are being pulled by their source...how apropos! To each his own!

18. Did you like the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" musical?

Some people just don't like musicals. There aren't very many made any more, but "Chicago" is one of the better ones in that genre.

Decades after the muscial-on-film genre went flat, "Chicago" dashed out of gate smart, fast and allegorical. No musical is ever taken at face-value -- it's a musical! -- but for song-dand-dance entertainment, Chicago's only rival is 1972's "Cabaret."

25. Loved BTVS The Musical, and Moulin Rouge, and Chicago

Old musicals (like Sound of Music) leave me COLD! UGH. But new ones are often fun, Chicago, All that Jazz, BTVS, Moulin Rouge, RHPS, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita.


For some reason Joseph and the Technocolor and Cats both bored me silly, as did Godspell.

Those were TV musicals. I thought "Cop Rock" was awesome, but no one else did, and the show was quickly canceled. Ditto "Hull High."

Renee Zellwigger needs to seriously eat something. I mean, I know actress keep thin because the movies add 10lbs, but even 10lbs would still make her way too thin.

The only thing that kept me watching that film was Richard Gere and Queen Latifah. I could have done with someone else for the lead actresses!

28. Best music in any screen musical since Cabaret

And no, Moulin Rouge does not count to me because it isn't original music. It's much harder to sell music written for a stage show in the 1970s, that's based on music styles of the 1920s. Of course people love the music in Moulin Rouge, the songs are the top 20 hits of the last 40 years of pop music and everyone knows them.It is a beautifully filmed, well acted and very creative endeavor. The musical value is nearly nil, except for McGragor, who has a fine voice.

I love Chicago, though it isn't nearly as good as seeing it on stage. Zeta-Jones and Queen Latifah were fabulous and John C. Reilly was as good as he always is. The costumes, dancing and cinematography were also great, though a bit fast-paced for my taste. Zellwegger actually sings better than some stage Roxies including Ann Reinking and Gwen Verdon, but she utterly LACKS their presence, enthusiasm, charisma and dancing skills. I would have cast someone much older who could dance and sing a bit - Goldie Hawn comes to mind, and she was slated to be in the film many incarnations ago. She actually has a very nice, though small, voice if you have not heard her sing.

29. Absolutely Unwatchable

It was SO bad that i couldn't watch it while on a transatlantic flight. I mean, what else did i have to do except just sit there? Absolutely a low rent version of Cabaret and All That Jazz. I found it dreadful.

I wanted to stand up and cheer, as did several other people in the audience, when I saw it in the theatre. The performances weren't amazing (though Katherine Zeta Jones was really good).... but the way it was put together was great... and the lyrics and commentary were fun and interesting. Plus I enjoy a little camp. But to each their own. I generally enjoy just about any style of musical, so to each their own.

33. The Theatre production is awesome!

In some ways the movie doesn't really do it justice. All that in-your-face dancing is just steamy, steamy, steamy! But, there you go. I saw a road show here in Chapel Hill a couple of years ago. Wow! For the first time In my life I was compelled to go out and experiement with REALLY RED lipsticks! Normally I stick to more business-type colors of makeup, nothing too dramatic.

34. I didn't even see it and I hated it!!

Just the trailers were enough to make me nauseated. Of course, I didn't really like anyone in it either, especially CZJ. I don't know why I dislike her so much, but I really can't stand her.
