I saw a link to this thread on FR and went, even though I knew better. I'll save you the trouble. I just wanted to share a few quotes. It makes my head nearly explode to think these are from real people with voting rights.

someone posts "When you failed to do it for the least of these here brethren of mine..you failed to do it for me" and gets this back..

He must have been talking about something besides taxes. . . no, he said that after someone complained about paying taxes. Jesus did show contempt for money changers in the temple, but they weren't tax collectors, they weren't government agents of any kind, they were profiteers somewhat like the entities that freepers defend every day.

He wouldn't approve of giving money to areas that are "prone" to that activity? SO when was the last tsunami that killed over 100,000 people? Now, how much aid did this same freeper approve of giving to say hurricane victims, flood victims on the Mississippi, tornado victims in tornado alley, etc. All of those are areas that have the same problems year after year. So you have a place that has one tsunami in a century and it's "prone" to that kind of activity, you have places that get flooded every couple of years, places that get destroyed by hurricanes every few years, etc. and they are not "prone?"

At the time the tax-collectors were pretty much told how much they were expected to produce, and then left alone as long as the gov't got the money it wanted. They had a reputation (apparently generally well-deserved) for demanding more than needed so as to skim a layer off for themselves.

The collection of tax is perfectly reasonable (rendering unto Caesar and all of that), but cheating the poor and oppressed is not.

The two tax collector moments I can think of are:

The parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, in which Jesus spells out the proper way of praying and engaging other people: the pharisee prays loudly "I think you God for not making me like that tax collector over there" and the tax collector prays "Have mercy on me, a sinner". Obviously, in this case, the tax collector is the good guy.

The other time is with the short of stature tax collector who climbs into the tree to see Jesus, and Jesus calls to him and says "Get out of that tree, for I am coming to your house ofr dinner". And, dammit, I can't think of the name of that guy.

Freeps are so stupid. The people that Jesus railed against were the Pharisees and the Publicans and the Sadduccees. The "holier-than-thou" groups, who acted, well, like freepers, and didn't give charitably, taught that poor people are poor because of their sin, and said that they were more holy than anyone else because they followed more of the law than anyone else, and totally ignored every prophets' words about taking care of the widows, orphans, the poor, and those who couldn't find justice.

That's actually pretty mild. The average pinhead there contends that they should pay NO taxes, apart from paying for the armed forces. They have raised victimhood to an art; the pure selfishness and constant whining is breath-taking. These are the people who think, against all proof to the contrary, that they are sure to get extremely wealthy any minute now. And they resent having to pay any of that hypothetical money to help the "losers" who aren't going to get rich.

They're an unhealthy brew of ignorance, delusion and greed.
