Two men accused of stealing and torturing a neighbor's pet duck have been arrested in Pierce County, deputies said.
The men lived next door to the duck's owner. They were also suspected of causing thousands of dollars in damage to their rental house — after they were evicted — and then trying to pin the crime on someone else, deputies said.
The two men, ages 18 and 19, were booked into the Pierce County Jail late Monday night on suspicion of stealing and killing a pet and first-degree malicious mischief, which is a felony.
Bail was set at $10,500 each.
The Seattle Times does not usually name suspects until formal charges have been filed.
The pet duck was stolen last month from its owner's back yard in the 13500 block of 203rd Street East in the Graham area of Pierce County, deputies said.
Pierce County Sheriff's Office spokesman Detective Ed Troyer said deputies had already been investigating the two in connection with the alleged eviction crime, which caused major structural damage to the house.
Among other things, vandals smashed a beer keg against a wall, causing about $15,000 in damage, Troyer said.
The men denied responsibility, according to Troyer.
The men became suspects in the duck's disappearance after deputies realized that the two lived next door to the duck's owner, Troyer said.
