Anyone else uncomfortalbe with Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On
Being used as the music in a commercial featuring children on a school bus?
For obvious reasons to those who love this song the last thing I want to associate with this song when I hear it is school children.
I guess its supposed to be cute, but to me its just bad taste.

1. Call it bad taste, or just plain stupidity I guess.
One that irks me is when the use Credence's "Fortunate Son" to sell blue jeans. I saw that one and just wanted to puke seeing a message like that twisted so heinously.

These advertisers apparently know no shame. :eyes:

2. Levi's wanted to use 'Holiday in Cambodia'
to sell jeans. It makes no sense. These are attempt to co-opt with the assumption the viewer will engage in a little congnitive dissonance.

And yeah, that commercial with the bus and the gaye and the whatnot... is in pretty bad taste.

4. There was an interview with John Fogerty re: FOrtunate Son
being used for Jeans.

Apparently, the record company holds the rights to the song, and he thought it was OUTRAGEOUS that a song about protesting the war, and about the hypocracy of those who wage war, but don't find the need for THEIR sons to die (while they find the right for other's sons to die) was being used to hawk jeans.

He said something to the effect that the ad execs apparently only heard the part about "The Red White And BLue' and thought it would make a good advertising jingle, and he hoped that the 'older' generation would remember what the song was about, but then said that it probably didn't matter if they remembered because they're not the prime marketing age anymore....

3. I kinda agree with ya.
I know what commercial you're speaking of. It is inappropriate for school kids. There was another commercial from the past that involved kids using that same song. I mean, it may be harmless but if you think about it "let's get it on" is saying "Let's have sex".

I do love that song, though.

6. That's The Title Of The Song... But...
... didn't they clip and edit the background music and limit it to everything EXCEPT the part where the words "let's-get-it-on" are sung?

Everything we do hear is the instrumental lead-in and other parts of other verses... but not the "Lets Get It On" chorus.

A minor point... but clearly it entered someone's mind and that's why they edited it out so carefully.

5. How about McD's comm. : "Never Pass up a chance with Twins"
I mean, come on. The mascot is a clown. The biggest seller is happy meals. And their ads aim for a "man's man" (quote) and gives tips such as "Never pass up a chance with twins" after which it switches into its two for two deal.
