I passed the LPI Level 1 Exam 101 today - ask me anything

Basically this is step one of four to achieve a certification in Linux system administration from the Linux Professional Institute. I did prepare and hoped I would pass, but I didn't expect to get the results right away. Plus having taken this test I think the other ones will be easier to prepare for.

4. This one is relatively cheap

Compared to the other exams, of course - nothing's cheap when things are tight. Each exam is only $100 and you get a certification if you pass the first two. I want to pass all four which would get me two certifications, I think.

To study I used 4 Linux books that I had already purchased, but you can use the Internet to review a lot of the stuff if you've have experience. (I have work experience as a sysadmin, and I do think it would be hard to pass the test without that experience.)

Another option is to use books on the O'Reilly Books "Safari" site - http://safari.oreilly.com/ - I think it's around $10/month to "check out" five books, you read them online and can rotate them.

Anyway, that's how I did it on the (relatively) cheap. I would NEVER shell out for the MCSEs (Microsoft tests) -- let my employer pay for that if they want it. :)

In layman's terms: If I pass another test I will get a piece of paper saying I know stuff about computers and software (particularly Linux). If I pass two more I'll get another piece of paper. These pieces of paper will hopefully look good to future employers (along with my experience).
