INSANITY!!

I was forced to watch network TV for a day because cable was out to to an ice storm. So I turn on the news this morning and the first two stories I hear are:
1. parents want the book The Giver banned
2. 50 preachers in Wichita are having a prayer rally next week to help the cops catch the BTK killer.

WTF??? Anyone else see a problem here? Or am I just lost in fundie land???

1. I think the problem is widespread.

I suspect you would have seen the same thing on cable.

2. We are lost in fundie land.

This week in my classroom:

I'm battling with a fundie student. Why? Because he isn't doing any work. Instead, he is pulling out a book to read through every lesson and work period. Finally, in frustration, I told him if I saw the book again, I would take it. He asked if I was trying to deny him his religious rights. :wtf:

What was the book? The ninth "Left Behind" book. That was his winter break project; he's reading through all of them, and engaging his fellow students (10 year-olds!) in arguments about Revelations, because everything these books say is TRUE!!! "NOT OPINION; IT'S FACT! IT'S TRUE!!!"

... being "denied" his religious freedom? Oh, gag me!

This one is only ten years old. I'm sure he didn't discover that he was being persecuted all on his own.

7. OMG

I am so sorry. What a mess. We have had two days off due to an ice storm. It took me an hour to get to school today - usually it's 20-25 minutes. I couldn't open my car door and then at the gas station, I couldn't get my tank thingie open. So I am finally at school the minute the buses pull up, meaning I have no 'down time' before kids. And I know you know how bad that is. But I have only 4 kids here! Normally I have 10. #5 just walked in. (The one I wish would have stayed home:)

I hate these days. I don't want to do anything important with half my kids gone. But the ones who are here think it's play time and I can't have that. We just started reading HOLES (I LOVE that book!) so I am having them make rattle snakes and yellow spotted lizards for the bulletin board.

Darn! Just found out the computer teacher is not here so I lost my planning time.

Anyway, COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS. At least your kids can read. And if you aren't dealing with ice, I am jealous.

10. We had a flood, then a snowstorm, then another flood

here this morning, all AFTER school started. This, in an area that gets, on average, less than 8 inches of precipitation a year.

The looks on all of our faces were priceless. A few hours earlier, and we would have been snug and dry at home, with a day "off." Instead, we dealt with the storm all day. This, in a school full of trailers with no hallways or other shelter of any kind.

Now that I'm home, it's stopped raining and is clearing up. :eyes:

There's another storm coming in on this one's tail; it's supposed to be like this all weekend, and into Monday.

Desert kids have an extreme reaction to weather of any sort; they have so little experience with it! On the positive side, it distracted my "left behind" kid from his book and his mission, and we had a good day. ;-)

Just kidding. But i understand. My county went 71% for DimSon. But my news doesn't consist of book bannings and prayer meetings.

I told my husband I want to move to Canada.

I don't think I could walk in a church again if I was dying and the only cure was prayer. I find these religious nuts kookier all the time. No wonder they elected an idiot as prez.

If those preachers in Wichita 'catch' the serial killer, I will apologize for being a skeptic. But I am not holding my breath.

11. THE GIVER?????? THE GIVER?

I've taught that book umpteen million times to eighth graders and it's nothing they can't handle.

SPOILER:

A baby is killed by lethal injection with a needle to its scalp.

That's the worst part of the book, graphically speaking. The rest is tame stuff.

What the fundies probably object to MORE is the fact that the book is ALL about questioning authority. That's one of the MAJOR themes.

Ahem.

It's a futuristic/Utopian type novel for teenagers. Women are chosen to give birth and the babies are given to families, open adoption style. One boy and one girl per family. Your spouse is chosen for you, etc.

Sort of a Brave New World for teenagers.
