15,000 Brits complain BEFORE BBC shows Jerry Springer the Opera

"David Soul, star of West End hit Jerry Springer - The Opera, has defended the BBC's decision to broadcast the show. The corporation has received more than 15,000 complaints over plans to screen the production on BBC Two on Saturday...

BBC director general Mark Thompson said the corporation usually got more complaints when they edited out obscenities than it did when it let expletives go out uncut...

The BBC has said the show is "boundary-breaking" and admitted it will not appeal to some tastes. But warnings about the language will be given before it is broadcast at 2200 GMT. But the National Secular Society defended the BBC's right to screen it, urging the BBC not to give in to "religious bullies"...

The show includes a nappy-wearing Jesus saying he is "a bit gay" while a reported total of 8,000 obscenities was reached by adding every swear word sung by each member of the 27-strong chorus. "

Just for your info, the stage musical was the first EVER to win every prize in its category at the West End musical awards (or some other awards ceremony....can't remember).

1. More than one obscenity per second!

I was rather amused when I read that 8,000 total. Somebody pointed out that, given the running time of the show, there would have to be more than one obscenity per second to reach that number.

4. Mediawatch

I doubt there were complaints from 15,000 individuals. The article says that, "TV clean-up campaigners Mediawatch-UK have rallied against the show". I wouldn't be surprised if most of those complaints came from that one source. Certainly, 15,000 complaints is huge for any show, let alone one that hasn't even been aired yet.

It reminds me of the recent story that said that 99.8% of complaints to the FCC came from the Parents Television Council
