He called yesterday to cancel, but the owner of the resort assured him that there were still cottages that would be ready and begged him not to cancel his plans. It's not a big chain and is independently owned.
So he and my step mom are going. Not sure what they will find, but it's not going to be an ordinary vacation. For example, besides eating with the staff and locals rather than in the dining room, the resort owner e-mailed a list of things that are needed locally that they may be able to take with them on the plane. (things that the staff and their families will need, certain medicines that are hard to get right now, etc.) They also agreed to help with the clean up of the grounds and other buildings. Sounds like they are going to be put to work.
My step mom comes from a pretty hard-working but poor family and I imagine this won't be too dificult for her. May be different for my Dad, but it will be good for him.
