1. Sorry, but my favorite superhero is King Mob
Edited on Mon Sep-29-03 08:21 PM by khephra
And he's far cooler than Batman. Heck, King Mob sort of exists.

Would Spider Jerusalem count as nearly as cool as Batman?

3. King Mob's not a superhero, and neither is Spider
Just wait for the "alternative comics" thread, sucka!

Of COURSE King Mob is cooler than Batman, but he's not a superhero, he's a super secret agent with awesome taste in music and a smokin hot girlfriend.

8. If I ever get around to reading Moore's Swamp Thing run, I'll probably
feel the same way.

But for now, when he's written right, Bats owns all other super-jerks.

The best Bats moment ever: The first issue of JLE, Green Lantern Guy Gardner keeps trying to talk smack to Bats, and Bats bitch slaps him and tells him to sit down. Eat it, Guy! You make John Stewart look like a cool GL!

Edited on Mon Sep-29-03 08:29 PM by khephra
FINALLY....

after all these years they managed to put out the last Moore TPB.

Now I'm waiting for a collection of Mark Millars' end to the series to be collected. That was the run that introduced me to his work.

A good runner-up is the recent Starman.

7. Bats is OK, but
I do have a soft spot for Spiderman. It was the first comic I got into as a kid. I was surprised to see Sandman on your list, I never saw Gaiman's version as much of a "superhero." Green lantern is OK in my book. He has been portrayed as a good lefty. My all time favorite was Swamp Thing. (Both versions)

11. I have a suspicion that if Grant Morrison wrote Green Lantern
as an ongoing title then we could have a runner-up for Batman. Heck, he managed to make Kyle interesting in JLA. Just think what an ongoing would be like?

Then again, an ongoing Shazam by Morrison would be the coolest thing since frozen snickers.

Can I just say that every superhero is the coolest when they're being written by Grant Morrison?

14. Yes. Yes you can.
Actually, Judd Winick's run on GL (is he still writing it? I lost track of comics about a year ago) was really good, aside from the stupid sub-plot with Kyle's gay assistant. If I wanted McGruff style political commentary in my comics, I'd read your graphic novel about Pablo or whatever his name was, Winick.

21. Here's some of what Grant is going to be writing in the next 2 years
snip..............

"I have so much work lined up for the next two years (several Vertigo books, three big DCU projects, the 'Sleepless Knights' script for 'Dreamworks' which is undergoing revision at the moment, a book on magic and a couple of high-profile games projects) that it made sense to accept all the perks of DC's offer of an exclusive. I already know exactly what I'm writing for the next two years and it's either for DC or for sources outside comics so I decided to accept the warm, bosomy security of my old alma mater. The marvel years were exciting and creative but quite turbulent and stressful in a lot of different ways. I feel the need to drift along without worries for a while."

Of course, now one has to ask- is Morrison going to be tackling Superman? Which DC heroes will he deal with? What are those Vertigo projects? Morrison answered some of these questions and left fans guessing on others. " I have three new 'creator' projects already underway and due for release early 2004 - 'creator' meaning that the artist and writer own the damn thing and it's a totally new story, not some old superhero reheat of what your dad was reading while the thought of you boiled in his testes - 'Vimanarama!' with Philip Bond. 'We3' with Frank Quitely and 'Seaguy' with Cameron Stewart will all be out next year. These books all written and I'm already prepping loads more new stuff for next year.

"I'm deep into a massive DC universe project (something completely new, and not the defunct 'hypercrisis' notion) which involves at least seven new series so far. I've written 28 plots in a week of activity and it's been the biggest damburst of creativity I've ever known. Apart from that I can't say anything more about this except that it's probably the last thing anyone will expect.

"I have two other major DCU projects also in the works and well underway. As I say, I've been experiencing an outrageous explosion of fresh ideas since I completed X-Men. I'm so excited about this stuff I wish I could tell you more, but as usual everything will be announced nearer the time.

more......................

Remember, Watchman started as an attempt to bring in the Charlton characters that DC had just bought.

It's more accurate to say that Rorshach was Moore's The Question stand-in. (Oh, The Question is getting a new book by Rick vietch. :bounce: )

Dr. Manhattan was Captain Atom.

The Comedian was Peacemaker.

anybody but Batman......he lost all the cool points he ever had hanging out with Robin.

Seriously....have you ever noticed Robin's outfit? The definition of uncool.

Personally I vote for Dr. Strange:

He's just some guy who learned magic from an old guy in the mountains, but that magazine that's all about comics (I forgot the name) ranked him the 4th or 5th most powerful hero in all of comic books.

This guy has defeated gods. He actually went into their realm/dimension and beat 'em down.

Like I said this guy ain't got no superpowers, just some stuff he learned from an old guy.

I also vote for Xavier of the X-Men. Name another guy who sits in a wheel chair that can kick a bunch of superheroes asses.

25. HOT OFF THE COMIC PRESSES --- MARVEL SETTLES WITH JOE SIMON
MARVEL SETTLES WITH JOE SIMON

Putting to end a years-long legal battle over the ownership of the Captain America character, it was announced early this morning that Marvel and Cap creator Joe Simon have reached a settlement in regards to the character, with Simon assigning Marvel any and all copyrights to the character.

Simon’s battle for Captain America dates back to 1999 when the creator filed paperwork to terminate the transfer of copyright he made to Marvel Comics in 1940. While controversy broke out shortly after the filing of what Simon’s role in the creation of the character really was (as many have strongly suggested Jack Kirby was at least a co-creator of the character), Simon was following in the footsteps of the widow and daughter of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel, who had done the same with Superman and DC Comics – a matter which, reportedly is still yet to be settled.

Simon filed the paperwork in late 1999, and, if his efforts had succeeded initially, the copyright would have been returned to him on December 7th, 2001.

Much legal maneuvering ensued following the initial filing, the case moved laboriously toward the courts, with the most recent update coming in June of this year, when Simon’s lawyers were forced to go back to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals and try to get a jury trial.

64. Someone who doesn't seem to have a large fanbase -- Dan Jurgens
Edited on Mon Sep-29-03 09:51 PM by khephra
I've read reviewers who hate everything else he's written, but are currently enjoying this run. I've only read the last issue, so I wouldn't know. It was an interesting take, I'll say, but they're now getting to the point that the reset button will have to be pushed at some point for the series to continue in a shared universe.

Other titles to check out:

Daredevil - Bendis (again with issue 55)
Ultimate Spider-Man --- Bendis
Ultimate X-Men -- Bendis
Ultimate FF -- Bendis and Millar
MYSTIQUE -- BRIAN K. VAUGHAN (Y-The Last Man's writer)
RUNAWAYS -- BRIAN K. VAUGHAN
X-STATIX -- PETER MILLIGAN
SUPREME POWER -- (J.M. Straczynski's updating of the Squadron Supreme)
1602 --- (Gaiman transports the Marvel characters to 1602 in a story that isn't a "what if?...8 issues)

I only have a current Marvel list handy, so no new DC books to add...

Although Plantary is back on schedule again, if you were reading that?

37. Yellow is his weakness, let me count the ways...
Just think, a lemon could defeat the Green Lantern.

Tweety could defeat him.

A light bulb could defeat him.

I don't think he's into golden showers...

Candles could defeat him.

A condom could defeat him.

Fire would annihilate him utterly.

Daisies would hurt him royally.

Does he come out only at night? Daylight must hurt...

He probably hates the flag "Don't tread on me" with its yellow background.

He's probably not fond of gold either.

What about clothing? Villains simply need to wear yellow smocks... And, obviously, Captain Kirk could rip him apart...

Something tells me he hates canaries...

He avoids mustard like the plague.

And the sun is worth mentioning twice...

I gather he's not fond of corn on the cob after the husk has been shelled...

I doubt he drives given the commonplace of yellow street lights and traffic light signals...

Hah! He should evaporate in a puff of smoke, he's cowardly yellow AS a reaction to anything yellow! :D

42. I think yellow isn't a problem anymore
But I still hold that the original Green Lantern's weakness to wood (iirc)was worse than yellow.

47. Yeah, Kyle's practically all-powerful now
Since most of the other GL's are dead after Hal went nuts and turned into what's his name, Kyle has like an entire GL Corps worth of power, he doesn't have to charge his ring, it has zero weaknesses, and for a while he was so powerful he was able to give GL John Stewart back the ability to walk. But then Superman got all whiny about someone being more powerful than him and gave Kyle a guilt trip and he went back to being a regular superhero, though the ring still has no weaknesses.

The Spectre. I think it ends in "x" though. Fuck, this is gonna drive me nuts.

69. There ya go
I hated that storyline, because I was always a HUGE Hal Jordan mark, and I still have my misgivings about Kyle.

But then, it did give us that kick ass Kevin Smith Green Arrow reboot. Did it fall by the wayside after he left? Did he ever get to do that Brave And The Bold remake he was talking about?

73. Smith still hasn't finished a Spider-Man/Black Cat mini
from over a year back. He says he's still going to do something like that, but they started up a Batman/Superman book under a different title, so I'm thinking DC doesn't have much faith in that one ever getting off the ground.

The currect Green Arrow writer is the guy you mentioned who was doing GL up until recently earlier on.

Who rob and steal from those who need
To right this wrong with blinding speed

Grifter comics...#1 even...

I also got the big action figure that came out years ago...don't know if it's worth anything...but it was cool at the time...

80. Nice bias, lol.
The all out BEST superhero in my opinion had to be Apocolypse (X-Men).

Now I know he isn't a HERO, but he was so badass his flow can infiltrate this thread.

The coolest real hero was Wolverine. I know, it's all X-Men, but that was the only comic series that really interested me when I was young.

83. Batman is a fascist tool of the wealthy elite
Think about it, a rich kid runs around beating up bad guys who probably just got laid off by Wayne Corp. and are trying to feed their families. And what gives him the right to break-and-enter, perform illegal surveillance, and so on? No one, that's who.

Green Lantern, on the other hand, fights for the forces of good defending the galaxy, while asking for nothing in return (except maybe a fan club).

Oh, and, by the way, Green Lantern is no longer susceptible to yellow. Kyle retooled the ring after giving up his Ion status so that it doesn't hurt him anymore.
