12-year old thinks it's cool. It wasn't rock and roll, and it wasn't pure blues (southern style). I don't know what it is, but it's been one of my favorite songs for decades.

I can never choose a favorite Elvis song, not even when it's narrowed down to a list. Still, I managed to vote for "Jailhouse Rock," solely because it's a serious contender for the best rock 'n' roll ever recorded.

And, yeah, "Heartbreak Hotel" was emblematic of Elvis' musical character in its refusla to be easily pigeonholed -- what the heck is it? Blues? Country? Secular gospel? All of the above, and more, I think, and the thing about Elvis that many don't seem to get (especialy the hipper-than-thou f***wits who in decades past infested the pages of music magazines and are now currently being trendily obtuse on DU) is that Elvis embraced and embodied a variety of musical stylings that melded within him into something entirely different than what anyone else was doing, or even thinking of doing. Debate all you want about who really 'started' rock 'n' roll, or what the first rock 'n' roll song was, but Elvis' natural ability and his eclectic and catholic (not always for the best, I admit) taste in music earned him a place that can never be usurped by any revisionist view of the '50s. That talent never faded, either, because it was an essential part of who Elvis Presley was -- it was the only thing that he could ever really count on. And his latter-day recordings were as difficult to categorize as were "Heartbreak Hotel" and the first Sun tracks.
