I wish everyone could have a unique avatar.

In other forums to which I've posted, each user had a unique avatar. Instead of looking at the name, I got used to looking at the avatar. Because of this, I sometimes actually miss the name of the poster and even respond without really registering who that person is.

Maybe it's a bad habit; maybe I learned more easily through visual input.

Any ideas on how to break this habit? I say this because I probably had conversations with Khephra and now I feel guilty that I did not remember him as an individual. There are a few people whose names I always recognize: WilliamPitt, Eloriel, arwalden, HypnoToad, etc. Usually it's because they've said something that really woke me up. And HypnoToad's GIF avatar and his collection of photos are hard to miss. :)

OK, tell me how I can start remembering user names instead of looking at the avatar first?

1. You CAN do a personal avatar

But most don't have time or perhaps don't know how. I'd gladly convert any pix folks have to the proper format. Feel free to PM me.

3. I've had this same felling...

I've often recognized people by there avatars first, screen name second.

Which is part of the reason why I've opted for a custom avatar myself...

This way, everyone recognizes me...:)

4. It isn't hard to get a personal avatar

but it has to be somewhere already on the internet, as I recall.

8. You can make your own. The blue animated paperclip was my design.

I can turn (almost) any picture you might have into a usable avatar. It just has to be the right size--pixel- and size-wise.

posted the picture of the avatar I wanted, and another kind-hearted DUer made it for me...

I could have never done it myself...I suck with computers...

10. True, but when you have thousands of posters, the avatars repeat a lot.

Since the board isn't going to adapt to my way of learning people's names, I guess I'll to adapt to the board's way of doing things...CatholicEdHead.

Perhaps that's the way to do it...include the person's nick in your reply?
