I'm from Ohio, the wife is from New Hampshire. When we see bad drivers she mutters "Massachusetts driver!" while I mutter "Michigan driver!" Having been to New England numerous times since our wedding however, I think she may be right about who is worse!

Although we make a lot of money off of them when they come here to shop. They do tend to drive 55 mph in the left lane, however. Luckily, they also tend to avoid 696 (metro Detroit's autobahn).

One of the new ministers at our church moved from Minneapolis, where I guess they drive more sanely. He told us he got on 696 one day, and then said "You people are crazy".

But 696 is pure Hell to me. It's either an autobahn or its bumper to bumper traffic going less that 5 miles/hour. They should have planned better before opening Oakland county up to all those commuters. Any driving in the southern part is painful.

Lived here all my life and people here in the Detroit area just do not seem to have a friggin' clue what a turn signal is for and drive aggresively as hell no matter what the weather conditions are like.

I had a professor from NY (I go to a college in the metro Detroit area) and he asked, "does anyone ever use a turn signal here?".

He's right. I was changing lanes (and I always use at turn signal if someone is near me) the other day and some ass hole just cut in from the other lane. He had no signal and luckilly I moved over in time.

The more politically extreme a state is, the more likely for the state to have terrible drivers.

For example, Texas has some of the nuttiest around, as do NY, and MA.

Also, while there are a lot of crazy drivers here in MI, I found the drivers to be crazier as I drive south (in TN and KY I'd get people flashing their lights and I was fifteen over already).

Lots of angry, aggressive drivers. Loved going on Lake Shore Drive, although you always feel like driving faster than the limit, especially on the south side! But the truckers on the Kennedy-Dan Ryan were the scariest in the world, lots of wreckless acts and accidents.

I had to commute between Madison and Janesville in WI for 6 months last year and thought the truckers were much better drivers on the interstate than in IL.

The drivers here are HORRIBLE! Failing to go on green. Accelerating through yellow light. Blocking intersections and locking the grid. Refusing to move over to allow someone to merge on the highways. Right turns on red without actually stopping. Passing on the right.

After all the driving i've done all over the states, all over Europe and in Japan and China, i readily admit that we have the worst drivers. (Except maybe Barcelona.)

Locally (I'm in Philly) the Delaware drivers are just terrible but nationally Texas drivers are the worst I've ever come across. I've never seen such a display of idiotic driving as when I was in Dallas in November. The fact that their highway system is completely retarded doesn't help.

Not just bad drivers, but HUGE variation. Like, everyone has their own unique way of driving, so nothing is predictable.

Actually some things are predictable:
- people who make left turns onto busy streets, are even more likely to do it right in front of you during snowstorms. As if weather is no reason to change driving habits
- people on on-ramps will drive a decent speed, and then slam on the breaks at the very last minute.
- if a person bumps into you at a stop or yield sign, they will go racing off so you can't get their license plate numbers, and will not stop to see if you are ok

There was a local news article that mentioned it yesterday. People in California completely ignore crosswalks, and the number of peds who get injured and killed by cars here is absolutely staggering (it's one of the reasons Critical Mass got so big in SF). My local city, in an effort to reduce the number of people getting injured and killed in crosswalks is combating this problem by...REMOVING THE CROSSWALKS. The thinking is that crosswalks give pedestrians a false sense of security, and that by removing them the pedestrians are more aware of traffic and move across the street more quickly.

In that case, you have MA beat on at least that issue.

Here, the issue with crosswalks is that if there are 4 lanes of traffic (2 going each direction), one car with stop for the person in the crosswalk. Another car will speed around that car and almost hit the person in the crosswalk. The cars in the other 2 lanes will usually see him/her.

So people in crosswalks have at least a 75% chance of living. That's pretty good.

Back when I worked in the SF Bay Area I was constantly amazed at the number of traffic accidents people manage to get into while stuck going 10MPH in rush hour traffic. We WALK better than we drive.

+ You have the airheads in the convertibles.
+ You have the 105MPH "cruising speeds" of our freeways when we're NOT in rush hour.
+ You have the fact that nobody here knows what a turn signal is (primarily because using your blinker in rush hour traffic is seen as a signal for people in the next lane to close ranks lest you "cut" in front of them).
+ Of course, we can't forget about the tens of thousands of illegals cruising our roads without any kind of drivers training or tests.
+ Most of us seem to think that it's legal to cross an intersection as long as the light is still yellow when we enter it...even if we have to accelerate to 90MPH to make it.
+ And as if that weren't bad enough, we're the car chase capitol of the world!

Oh, and we can't forget that 50% of our drivers are in SUV's and think they own the road.

is that although it's supposed to be safe you still have to watch it sometimes. There are people here who've not driven in a town bigger than Iowa City and just freak out. There's also older drivers insisting the speed limit is 30 mph rather than 55 on two-lanes roads.
I've also seen several occasions where people insist on making left-hand turns from the right-hand lane where there is no double-turn lane. It's happened more than I want to remember.

When a driver in Massachusetts, or New York, or Ohio, or Michigan for instance has so many violations on his driver's license record that he stands in jeopardy of having it revoked. That's when he decides to move to Florida to get a clean slate but still drives the same way.

I travel regularly for my job. 20 states and 10 foreign countries. NOBODY drives as discourteously and as oblivious to the other folks on the road as we folks in Illinois. Central Illinois is not so bad, since there aren't that many people there and the roads are seldom congested. But in the Chicago area, it's the worst i've ever experienced.

I lived in Worcester many years agto and lately I've been having to drive to Boston. I used to think Mass drivers were the worst but the DC area I think has finally surpassed them. The drivers around here are far more aggressive than they are in Mass. I feel more comfortable driving in Manhattan than in DC. And don't even try if there is snow on the ground.
I'll admit I have never driven in LA but everywhere else I have been on the West coast has been pretty tame to the East

Stay off the road, even if you're an experienced snow driver. The majority of folks around here have no clue what to do. I'm so glad I quit that job.

I grew up around here, so when I came back to the East after having been gone for a long time, I figured it wouldn't be too much of a shock. Wrong. It was even worse than I'd remembered, and nothing I could say would have prepared my husband for the driving here.

I hate driving here!! Upper-class twits driving Hummers that have never been off the pavement. They think because they're in a Hummer they can drive 55mph on ice and snow. WRONG!

117. I've been to the lower 48 and most of Canada

And I can say without a doubt that...........there are bad drivers everywhere. I don't think that any one state or province has more than their fair share. I spent 3.5 years driving over the road as a trucker and that is my observation. I still drive truck, but I just go to Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan. Most of the time I don't leave Ohio. I've seen people make mistakes but no more so than anywhere else.
